I actually did not go to preschool. My mom was a single mom and instead I went to daycare at my Aunt's daycare. I remember she would read Dr. Seuss books to us before "naptime". This was probably my first interaction with books other than my mother.

In third grade, I remember my teacher having us create our own imaginative story and to illustrate a picture to go along with it. My teacher wanted a parent - teacher conference with my mom to discuss what I had wrote. She had told myself and my mom that she thought my story was so good that it could be a children's book with some cleaning up and illustrations. My mom was so proud of me and this was where I started to begin to actually like writing.

In 4th grade, my teacher read Judy Blume books to us. We would all sit on this rug at the front of the classroom and would take turns reading parts of it out loud. This is also the time I remember reading the Interactive Reader books. I did well in class to the point my teacher recommended me test for the GATE program. I was one of two students in my entire school to pass and be sent to another school my 5th grade year to be in the program. This year was also when my mom and I started reading the Harry Potter series before bed with each other.

This was the year I started the GATE program at a new elementary school. I was among a full classroom of other kids who also liked to read and write. The cool thing to do was to read the Series of Unfortunate Events books at the time so naturally that is what I did. I actually still have the whole collection to this day. Reading was fun for me during this time in my life and I would read a lot on my own at home.

My Freshman year of high school is probably when I started to loose interest in reading and writing. I was placed in an AP English class and I found it to be boring, uninteresting and difficult to keep up with the teachers confusing demands. My mom had me switched into a College Prep English class which was a lower level than AP at my high school. That AP class left a negative impression on reading and writing to me probably because for the first time, it was something that was hard for me to understand.

Just last semester I took a writing class called "Asian Eats" and it was probably one of my favorite courses I have ever taken. The course was centered around Asian food, its origin, how it became popular in the US, and how you can learn from it. I really enjoyed the content being studied and how it related to California history which made writing about it that much easier and actually enjoyable.
