Theater: Theatre Workshop '71

Founded in 1971 by the South African Institute for Race Relations. It was a theater workshop that allowed people to come together and learn about the art of theater. It started out as just a workshop, but eventually became a professional institute that put on very successful shows. I thought it was interesting to try to incorporate theater into society. It provided entertainment for people, and I personally always have thought theater shows were very interesting.

In 1977, a group of people who called themselves "cultural workers", who fled to Botswana. There, they established the Medu Art Ensemble. They specialized in theater, poetry music, graphics, visual arts, etc. This group of people wanted or express themselves in various creative ways. They didn't consider themselves "artists", but cultural workers as mentioned before. I thought ts was interesting to see poeple have a love and appreciation for art. To want to express yourself is very common, and many have the unknown talent of drawing, painting, sinking, etc.

Music: Kwaito Music

The genre of music emerged in the 1990s, and is a mixture of different rhythms. Some South African music legends that influenced the genre of Kwaito, such as Miriam Makeba and Brenda Fassie. The word Kwaito comes from a word kwaai, which translates to "angry". However it is often used as slang, having a positive connotation. Kwaito expresses the importance of township, as well as respecting/understanding it. I thought it was interesting how just like we have various types of music there; that they have their own music styl e that is deeply important to them and their culture.

The most loved South African snack. Biltong is spiced, dried meat. It is similar to American beef jerky. However, people all over South Africa eat this. The most common type of Biltong is a beef one. It is served as a snack at many social gatherings, and can be found pretty much anywhere.

The traditional Zulu dress code includes wearing animal skin for men and skirts decorated with beads for the women. Their clothing often involves very intricate and unique designs for each person. Clothes are typically hand sewn and are very specail to the people who wear these clothes. Each tribe found in South Africa dresses a bit differently from the next, which allows others to reconize them and appreciate their differences.

An interesting fact about South Africa is that it is commonly known as "the rainbow state". It is called this because it has very large and diverse griuols of people/religions. It has its share of poverty, but as well as very successful areas. One's culture is very important to the average South African, and they very often show their pride for it whenever they have the opportunity.

The most common sports to be played in South Africa include soccer, rugby, and cricket as the most popular. They often participate in the World Cup for soccer, and a team from there even won in 2007! However, in South Africa there is a growing number of new sports and activities among the young people. Some of these "newer" activities include, hockey, swimming, boxing, basketball, surfing, and skateboarding. South Africa is very diverse in their sports, and even has world renowned surfers, such as Jordy Smith, and boxers such as Jacob Mathala.
