Malaysia has increased investment in its ports, particularly Tanjung Pelepas and Port Klang, which compete with Singapore for container handling. With planned expansions and enhanced logistical networks, Malaysia might gain a greater portion of the regional maritime industry, potentially diverting some transshipment traffic away from Singapore.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is China's ambitious infrastructural and economic development initiative that aims to improve trade and connectivity throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe.
