Declining Fish Stocks

Overfishing has led to a noticeable decline in fish populations, including species like shad, yellowtail, parrotfish, and snapper. This not only affects biodiversity but also the livelihoods of local fishers. Many fishers operate without licenses and are largely unregulated. This lack of oversight makes it difficult to enforce sustainable practices and protect marine resources.

Jamaica's coral reefs are in poor condition, with the coral reef health index reaching an unprecedented low in 2020. Healthy coral reefs are crucial for marine life, and their decline exacerbates the problems caused by overfishing.

Fishers use methods such as bottom trawling, dynamiting and poison to get more fish.

•Regulations and strict Enforcement- catch limits, monitoring and surveillance

•Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)- Fishing sanctuaries, protecting important species such as lobsters and conch. Come up with a tag system to monitor growth of species.

•Sustainable Fishing Practices- selective fishing gear, seasonal closures.

•Community involvement and education- educating the public about overfishing and ways to conserve the population.

The Jamaican government is working to address these issues by promoting sustainable fishing practices, creating protected areas like Pedro Bank, and introducing new legislation to curb illegal activities. Addressing these challenges requires a cooperative effort from both the government and local communities to ensure the sustainability of Jamaica's fisheries and the protection of its marine ecosystems.
