DuBois made the better argument for their time. this is because one, he did his research and was younger than Washington, so he more than likely learned about him through some of the speeches he did. Two, DuBios had a confrontational voice that boldly targeted white supremacy. lastly, he was the first African American to get a Ph. D . Although he did not see what it was like in the South, he had strong believes and stood by them.

I believe that DuBois made a better argument. He says, "They do not expect that the free right to vote, to enjoy civic rights, and to be educated will come in a moment; they do not expect to see the bias and prejudices of years disappear at the blast of a trumpet; but they are absolutely certain that the way for a people to gain their reasonable rights is not by voluntarily throwing them away and insisting that they do not want them..." (Reading the American Past, pg. 119) I believe that this argument would have appealed to many because of the corruption of many officials of the time and the social injustices of many, not just African Americans. An argument that says that Washington's ideas are "voluntarily throwing them (rights) away and insisting they do not matter" would strike a chord and remind them of what they were giving up through compromise and what they could attain.
