1950s Artist: The Skyliners

The Skyliners are a doo-wop group that has been playing since 1958 to present day. The original group came from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and consisted of Jimmy Beaumont, Wally Lester, Jackie Taylor, Joe Verscharen, Janet Vogel, and Paul Conners. The got onto the Top 40 list with their songs: "Pennies from Heaven" and "This I Swear. Other popular hits of theirs include: "It Happened Today" (1959) and "Comes Love" (1962). In 1963 the group fell apart but later got back together in 1974, minus Jackie Taylor. Jimmy Beaumont recorded some of his own work which was much unlike his work with the Skyliners. Jackie Taylor was drafted in 1965, ten years later Wally Lester and Joe Verscharen left the group, and Janet Vogel committed suicide in 1980. Throughout the years many people joined and left the group, either forming into a group of their own or just plain leaving. The current line up is: Donna Groom, Mark Groom,Nick Pociask, Frank Czuri, and John Sarkis. Jimmy Beaumont was part of it too until he died in 2017. In 2012, the son of Janet Vogel, Gavin Rapp, made the film, "Since I Don't Have You," showing the backstage drama of the band and showed what lead to Janet Vogel's suicide.

It was a hit single in 1958, made the Billboard Hot 100 at number 12, and the Cash Box Top 100. Both Guns'N'Roses, Ronnie Milsap, and Don Mc Lean covered the song and had some success. The song is noted for its string and wind sections, Jimmy Beaumont's vocals, and Janet Vogel's soprano in her final chorus.

I choose this song because it was one of the songs my mom suggested and that I liked the most. My mom likes a lot of music from the 50s and 60s so she started playing some of the songs when I told her about the project. This song was my favorite out of all them because of the singing in the backround and the just the pretty harmony of it all. I was also drawn to the song based on to the backround of the band, since they have a crazy history, and the fact that they named the movie after this song.

Chosen Song: Unchained Melody

The song was originally written by Alex North and Hy Zaret, and sung by Todd Duncan. It was made for the movie Unchained, which took place in prison and starred former football player, Elroy Hirsch. The song was written to show the mood of the prisoners as they waited for time to pass. The Righteous Brothers were each allowed a solo for their albums, and Booby Hatfiled choose Unchained Melody, as he was a huge fan of Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. It was produced by Bill Medley, even though they were on Spector's label, and the song was just supposed to be album filler. Although, when they released the song in 1965, it climbed to number four in the Billboard Top 100. Hatfield even redid the song so the line "I need your love" was higher, which is a very popular change. Now, the Righteous Brothers' cover of the song is considered the definitive version, famous for Hatfield's vocals, which are described as romantic, powerful, ethereal.

1960s Artist: The Righteous Brothers

The Righteous brothers are a two man group who started out playing doo wop/R&B music, in 1962. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield started playing in Southern California, coming from the regional groups the Paramours and the Variations. In 1963, they started calling themselves the Righteous Brothers, with Medley known for his smoky baritone, and Hatfield for his high tenor and falsetto. In the next few years, they released a bunch of energetic R&B songs, like "Little Latin Lupe Lu," which was one of their greatest successes. Bill Medley acted as the group's producer and principal song writer, making it so they weren't well known, but when they got with the producer Phil Spector, they broke out nationally. They released "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'," in 1965, which became an extremely popular song that placed 16 on the Billboard Top 100, penned by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil. They released three more hits in 1965 under Phil Spectator: "Just Once in My Life," "Unchained Melody," and "Ebb Tide." But the Righteous Brothers didn't get along with Spector too well, so they teamed up with a group called Verve, and Medley once again took the position of songwriter and producer. They had a number one hit with Verve called: "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration," which was just as good as the songs they released with Spector. After that, they only had a couple more hits, even when they paired up with others. Then, in 1968, Medley left the group, leaving Hatfield to try and keep the group going with Jimmy Walker. As a soloist, Medley had a few hits, but neither "brother" was too good without the other, so, in 1974, they got back together, and released the song "Rock and Roll Heaven" soon after. In 1976, Medley retired from preforming, but the duo continued to tour on and off in the 1980s and 1990s. On one of these tours, in 2003, that Hatfield died. Medley is still alive today and revived the group with Bucky Heard. The Righteous Brothers have been nominated for the Grammy Awards, Best New Singing Group in the Billboard Disc Jockey Poll, and were admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This song was an obvious pick for me because it's a favorite of mine that I listened to a long time ago. This song was, again, connected to my mother. She told me how she used to send old love songs to my dad when he was away at college, and although this was just one of them, it was her favorite. She showed me the song and I fell in love with it too. My favorite lines are, "Time goes by so slowly/And time can do so much" because they are pretty accurate and they are sung beautifully in the song. I love it because the whole song is so emotional and powerful, and the way Hatfield sings both lovingly and pained is amazing. It really is such a wonderful love song.

I choose this song because it's one of my favorite songs from my favorite band. I love 70s music, but out of all them, Electric Light Orchestra's music has always stood out to me. Their music is unique and I love the way that each song tell a story in a way or embodies the title. Eldorado is one of my favorite of theirs despite how short it is and "Can't Get it Out of my Head" is the prettiest of them all. It's catchy, you might even say... you can't get it out of your head. Jokes aside, it does stick and your head and the music is so relaxing and calming. My favorite lines are the first few, "Midnight on the water/ I saw the ocean's daughter/Walking on a wave she came/Staring as she called my name." I love the story you get from the lines and the imagery you get from it. All in all its a great song.

Electric Light Orchestra: Can't Get It out of My Head

"Can't Get It out of My Head" is from Electric Light Orchestra's 1974 album, Eldorado. It was written and produced by group member Jeff Lynne. The song made it into the US Billboard Hot 100 at number nine, helping raise more awareness of the band and became the bands first top ten single. It also got number 14 in the US Cashbox Top 100 Singles, 23 in the US World Record Singles, 27 in US Radio & Records, and many others out of the country. Unfortunately, the song failed to chart in the UK, where they were from. But it was later recorded as the lead song in the The ELO EP, where it finally became a hit four years after it was originally released, whereas the other songs had already been hits in the UK. The song was covered by a few other artists later on like Fountains of Wayne, Velvet Revolver, Telekinesis, and others. It was also covered in 2006 by John Paul White, who was in charge of the music, in an episode of the OC, a teenage drama from 2003.

1970s Group: Electric Light Orchestra

It all started in the late 60s, when guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter (of The Move), Roy Wood, decided to get a band together, using violins, cellos, string basses, horns, and woodwinds, to bring a more classical sound to Rock n Roll. He wanted to pick up where The Beatles had left off. In 1970, Jeff Lynne joined after Carl Wayne left The Move and began to focus on a new project with Wood. That same year they released the groups first song, "10538 Overture," which became a top ten hit in the UK. Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan became the founding members of the group. Soon after they had their first debut concert in 1972, at the Greyhound Pub, in Croydon, Surrey. It consisted of Wood, Lynne, Bevan, Bill Hunt , Andy Craig , Mike Edwards, Wilfred Gibson, Hugh McDowell, and Richard Tandy. Although this grouping didn't last for long, and Craig, Wood, Hunt, and McDowell left the group. Lynne became the head of the band with the remaining line up-along with Mike de Albuquerque and Colin Walker-and produced another great album, soon after others predicted the band would fail after Wood left. "Roll Over Beethoven" made it into UK's top 10 and US chart single. Gibson and Walker left and were replaced by Mik Kaminski. In late 1973, they released their third album, On the Last Day, with the American version featuring, "Showdown," a popular single. In 1974, they released a fourth album, Eldorado, A Symphony, becoming their first golden album with a hired choir and orchestra. Mike de Albuquerque and Mike Edwards left and were replaced by Kelly Groucutt and Melvyn Gale, making the overall sound of the band better. At this point, Electric Light Orchestra was very popular in the US. In 1975, they released their fifth album Face the Music, with hit singles "Evil Woman" and "Strange Magic." In 1976, they toured greatly in the US, from February to April. A New World Record, became a platinum selling album. Then they released a multi-platinum winning album, Out of the Blue, in 1977, and their singles "Turn to Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky", and "Wild West Hero" all became hits in the UK. Following this, they started on a nine month, world tour with a spaceship stage, fog machines, and laser displays; it was advertised as The Big Night in the US and became the highest-grossing concert at the time. In 1979, they released another multi-platinum winning album, Discovery, and reached their peak popularity. In 1980, they worked on the soundtrack for Xanadu. The movie didn't do well, but the soundtrack earned a double platinum award. A year later they released Time, their ninth album with a different, more futuristic sound to it. In 1986, the band started to go in different directions and weren't doing as well as before, so after their last two albums (Secret Messages and Balance of Power) Electric Light Orchestra performed for one last time, on July 13th, 1986. Then they disbanded.

Not even my dad knew it, so I figured it would be interesting to choose and learn about. I liked the beat in the song so I stuck with it the group and song as my artist and song for the project. I liked the the lyrics of the song and the beat of it though I found more of the history behind it more interesting. I love how New Zealand loved the song so much and how it was pretty much obsessed with it compared to the rest of the world. I also found out that the packing for this song and "The Beach" had no words on it because the creator Peter Saville and Brett Wickens made it so the colored blocks were actually code for the artist, song, and label information once you decipher it (featured below).

The band New Order was originally called Joy Division, made up of Ian Curtis, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Bernard Sumner. After the suicide of Curtis, they changed the group's name, as they had agreed to early on that they would change the name if any of them had died. From then on they went by the name New Order, emphasizing it had nothing to do with National Socialism and Fascism. Although they felt that they still need another member, one that had a compatible musical style and skill to their own. So in early October, Morris's girlfriend Gillian Gilbert was invited to the group as a keyboardist and guitarist. In 1981, they released their first album Movement which were dark, melodic songs with a strong use of synthesizers. The band found it was still a low point for them though because they were still being heavily affected by Curtis's death. When they went back to New York, they started listening to things like post-disco, freestyle and electro, and mostly Italian disco. Morris even taught himself how to play the drums. This all lead to a change in their music, shown in their next two singles "Everything's Gone Green" and "Temptation." In 1983, they released Power, Corruption & Lies, which was a big change from their sound in Joy Division, with a mix of early techno music and their old guitar-based sound. "Blue Monday" became very popular but could only be bought on separately or on only some cassettes. In 1985 they released Low-Life, featuring "The Perfect Kiss" and "Sub-culture" and a year later Brotherhood, with its top songs "Bizarre Love Triangular " and "Angle Dust," a combination of synth break beat and the guitar sound from their previous album. They released Technique in 1989, which was influenced by the Balearic sounds of Ibiza, and had upbeat music paired with blunt, even sorrowful, lyrics. That year they also started touring with other groups in the U.S and Canada, while working on side projects. In 1990, they made the England national football team's World Cup campaign song: "World in Motion." The next album they released was Republic which was followed by Factory Record's collapse. Then New Order put the band on hold to focus on side projects. They got back together five years later and released Get Ready three years after that. In 2007, they released Waiting for the Sirens' Call with their new band member Phil Cunningham. They broke up for a little while, again, before getting back together in 2011. They just did a single show in Santiago, Chile.

Why I Chose this Song

I chose this song because its one of the only songs I know and like from the 90s and its music video is pretty great. The song is just really upbeat and fun, and its catchy enough that I'll probably be humming it for the rest of the day without being annoyed by it. Although, main reason I chose this song was more because the memories it brings back. My dad would show me this music video-and "Body Movin'"-when I was a little kid. I loved fighting, space stuff, and anything vaguely magical, so a giant robot fighting giant octopus, crab handed monster was just super cool in my eyes and touched upon everything I liked. I remember being all curled up in a blanket on the floor on a rainy day, and my dad and I would bounce to the music or occasionally do some robot dancing. It was great. "Body Movin'"was also a pretty good song but "Intergalactic" was far more catchy, and the other music video had a guy getting his head chopped off. I'm pretty sure that's not school appropriate, despite how fake it looks.

"Intergalactic" was released on May 12th, 1998 as their first single in their album Hello Nasty. The song was released under the American record label Capital Records. It was produced by Mario Caldato, Jr., who gets a shout out in the second verse of the song: "Mario C. likes to keep it clean." "Intergalactic" made it to 28 on the Billboard Top 100, marking it as the third song they were able to get into the top 40. In the Uk, the song was much more successful, making it to number 5 on The UK Singles Chart; therefore, making Intergalactic their biggest hit in the country. Later, in 1999, it got a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The music video for it was released in June of 1998, and was based off Japanese Kaiju Films. They filmed it in Tokyo, Japan, and the band members dressed like Japanese street construction workers, or Koji, wearing bright colored uniforms. The video won Best Hip Hop video at 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.

1990's Artist: The Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys all grew up in New York, and were heavily involved in the punk underground in the early 80s. Micheal "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "MCA" Yanch originally formed the group with drummer Kate Schellenbach and guitarist John Berry. At first, they received lots of criticism, they were seen as a joke and accused of "cultural piracy." For most of the mid 80s, they were ignored. In 1983, Schellenbach and Berry left the group and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz(who they'd known beforehand, along with his group Young and Useless) joined. After their song "Cookie Puss" they began to turn from punk music to rap. In 1984, they teamed up with producer Rick Rubin and officially signed on with Def Jam Records in 1985. A little while later, in 1986, they released the album Licensed to III. Even though they sold over 750,000 copies in the first six weeks, these songs weren't received very well by critics. The album's success was mostly because of the song "Fight for Your Right (To Party)." The rest of the album's songs weren't too good and were really violent and sexist; and their concerts were even more outrageous. While they were touring, they were thought to be inciting crime and frequently received lawsuits and arrests. Realizing that they had gone too far, the group started to change its song and image for the better. In 1988, they started to break away from Def Jam and Rick Rubin, as he started taking credit for their rise to fame and threaten to release outtakes in place of their next album. When they finally got away and the boys went to Capital Records in California. The Beastie Boys teamed up with the Dust Brothers to release their next album Paul's Boutique, which was completely different than their last album. It got some great reviews, but failed to get a hit and was forgotten about soon after. Then they built their own studio and created their own record after that, Grand Royal, which they released their next album, Check Your Head, under. Suddenly, they began to gain back followers and become more popular. After that they started to soar, releasing many more successful albums throughout the years and making Grand Royals a better record label, signing on with bands like Luscious Jackson. Although later down the road, right after they finished their last album "Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2" Yanch got cancer and died and the group disbanded.
