Holocaust by Ula Palka

" (...)Three different aspects are involved in our relation to others, sometimes complementary, sometimes contradictory: At first , by our relation to a universal history made of big events, which we differ from one society to another, especially by one person to another, according to the education, investigations carried out and our memory. Then a collective history, generally more detailed than the previous one structuring knowledge of a society (or group)by gathering many references on our geopolitical and cultural space. Finally a personal history that each of us will stay the only ne to collect and distribute within our heritage and life" ("Pictures from the past for the future")Try to use any ideas that come in handy to you or your teacher. If you have any yours - they will be more than welcome. I tried to incorporate as many ideas as possible - follow my posts with any comments or post yours with your films, art, lessons, posters or any other artefacts connected with the topic. The 27th January is the Holocaust Memorial Day so I felt obliged (living near the place called Auschwitz) to do it.

Read the article about Holocaust children. How do you feel while reading it: sympathetic/ neutral/ moved/ surprised? What is the real message behind the article? Is it possible for the children to feel the atrocity of war or you think that they forgot (intentionally or unintentionally) the facts about holocaust? Is technology playing its positive part in their lives' stories or is it just the means of moving the memories and their relatives who could have been dead already or are not able to use technology may not still be found ? Do you think Holocaust children are able to live normal lives after such tragedy as not only being left by parents but also after the things they have experienced? Finally, have you watched Unbroken film directed by Angelina Jolie? If not - watch it and answer the last question once again - has your answer changed?

Do you think reviewing such art is possible without being biased (after knowing the facts, the stories behind the canvas) ?2. Why is the author naming it 'deeply moving testaments to human resilience and the power of art'?

Here is the part of the fresc made by Italian artists Antonio Marii Michetti and Angelo Molfetta in St Joseph's church in Oswiecim built as a commemoration of the death of 40000 Italian victims of the Concentration Camp. Its design is uncommon for the churches as the tabernacle in the right smaller nava (aisle)- not in the centre as usual - and the octagonal baptisterium with tiny windows made of stones;the whole architectural creation made from the light in colour stone and with wavy material like wodden ceiling, beautiful Cross Road of Christ leading to the tabernacle and some events of big importance for Polish history on the left. The centre is around the Cross hill in the scented glass windows where the altar is enlightened by the small round window with the cross in the ceiling just above it. Have a look.

For example the one here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLwTFiFPS6Y And in another one short, taken out of the film scene about his unfair case in the "court" - the last meeting with the prosecutor who was simply lying in court to care that his crime was heard in the media to stir the truth with the lie outside the prison. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmqS2HvKyDs. And finally the discussion - in the USA Holocaust Museum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVj0T5QBirs. The form of getting knowledge is up to you - the certain values are to be take from it. And the truth that was so long preserved from the public opinion.

You can feel the silence falling at you, this heavy silence walks with you all around the place, made you feel afraid to break it. This experience stays with you forever. When we went into the gas chamber we could see the place of torment of thousands of people, they were scratching the walls to get out of there. Then the crematory next to it and black ceiling, covered in soot. It is a remarkable place to see, and to feel.

“There is nothing that Sauron cannot turn to evil uses”

I found this episode of a Polish series Days of Honour. This is a story about Maria Konarska who is a doctor and a widow and mum; her two sons are fighting in AK (the Polish Army in an occupied land) and she works in a hospital serving everyone , especially those imprisoned in Pawiak prison, sending clothes to the poor, teaching students at Tajne Komplety - which was an hidden type of studying during regime etc. What I like the most is the fact that nobody is neither white nor black - the two doctors (she was surprised by the fact that an old mate from before the war who is now at German army is placed in her hospital)at the different side of the war but trying to help ill people as much as they can. See if you like it - the cast is superb - Ms Gniewkowska, Mr Englert, Ms Romantowka, Mr Globisz, Mr Woronowicz, Ms Cielecka in later episodes, young actors who play teammates - two sons of Konarscy (Michal and Wladek - Jakub Wesolowski and Jan Wieczorkowski respectively), Jan (Antoni Pawlicki)who has a Jewish wife Lena (Agnieszka Więdłocha) and tries to rescue her from ghetto and Bronek (Maciej Zakoscielny)who fell in love with an actress Wanda (Maja Ostaszewska/Magdalena Różczka); she was prisoned in Pawiak where probably she was raped by a German officer. The cast of Germans also brilliant- Mr Adamczyk, Mr Malaszynski, Mr Bluszcz, Mr Wieczorek, Mr Kozyra .... A scriptwriter is Ms Ewa Wencel - she also plays a woman who rescues a child who must have gone through a trauma and probably is a Jewish child . A must see if you are interested in war films and history of good and bad people mingled in the time of choice when if someone wants to rescue his or her relative from the hell of concentration camp(Karol) is not a totally bad person any more. And the resource for the true models for all of them are here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cichociemni

We could see the terrible living conditions of normal people who lived in "wrong time" and just didn't have enough luck. For me exceptionally interesting was the art exhibition of images made by painter who survived this nightmare. When I was looking at paintings I could feel the pain and the suffering which the autor felt at this time.
[Joanna Majewska]

We visited Auschwitz Birkenau Museum last week. Not surprising was the fact, that so many people have died there. But I didn't know that the highest rate of deaths were form Hungary, the Jews. Places like that camp have their own terrifying vibe which makes the visitors fright, even cry - those who are more sensitive and empathetic. Vision of walking where couple years ago walked people with a death sentence on their backs is hair-raising in it's horrifying form. It's a place worth seeing at least once in our lives. Maybe it wouldn't be revolutionary for us, but it seems important to know what cruelty can born from baseless hate towards other human beings

[Iza P.]

I used my daughter's crayons, a different color for each of the story , and the other end was the end, and then there was all the middle part, which was the middle. And the blue line met the red line and then the yellow line, and the yellow line stopped becuase the character represented by a vertical band of orange cross-hatching, and all the lines that were still alive passed through it, came out the other side. The end, where all the lines stopped, was a beetfield on the Elbe, outside of Halle. The rain was coming down. The was in Europe had been over for a couple of weeks.

There were many heroes and heroines during the II World War. About some of them we know a lot but about the others not so much. There were many people who did many brave things and who can be a great inspiration for young people but we don’t even know that they existed.

Janina Bodnar-Takajszwili is one of them. She was a treasurer of one of the biggest underground grouping in Poland, a secretary of famous Andrzej Rzewuski and because of her, contact with London government was well kept.

Her life was always in danger because she used parts of her home as a secret warehouse for things like weapons, ammunition, patriotic symbols which were also at this time illegal, grenades and explosives. She also kept hidden a whole archives of WSGO “Warta”. All of these things were hidden in different places, like on the attic or under floor boards. Every time enemy troops were in her house she had to keep calm and think quickly to not reveal any information about wat was in the house or what she knew about underground activities.

Her life was hard and difficult. She had to lie to her friends and family to keep her work as a secret. But she did all of it because she loved her country and she wanted to make it free again. Even though she probably was scared she still fought, and was only thinking about the wealth of Poland and not about herself and her personal problems.

K. Wawrzyk

I think Janusz Korczak is one of those quiet heroes some know others don't. But should. He wasn't a soldier. He did't fight with weapons, but with kindness and love. He was a doctor and social activist, especially for children's sake. He was a Jew too, what made him a target for Germans. He founded 2 Children's Homes. One of them The House of Orphans was specially for Jewish children, it existed in years 1912-1942 in Warsaw. He was one of the kindest persons that ever lived, he loved his job and was dedicated to it to the very end, when, even when he had a option to leave, he stayed with children and has been taken to the concentration camp in Treblinka and murdered in gas chambers with around of 200 children he took care of. He was holding hands with them, and guiding them further. In the film "Pianist" we can see a character who is meant to be Mr. Korczak, singing, dancing and playing with children on the ruined streets od Warsaw despite chaos and death surrounding them. He tried to keep the world as a warm and kind place for them. This is one of the greatest heroes. G. It is not right. We should speak up about their courage, not only about well-known, but also we should look for unknown. Because they could be a wonderful inspiration for the lives of many young people.
One of these people is Elżbieta Zawacka. Also has known as “Zo”, “Sulica” or “Zelma”. She was born in 1909 (before Poland regained independence). Before the war, she was a teacher, but in September 1939 she joined the Silesian branch of ZWZ (Union of Armed Struggle). During the war, she worked as a courier to keep contact with Polish government in London. She often traveled across Germany – it was really dangerous. When she went on February 1943 to London, she came back half of year later as member of Cichociemni. She was the only woman in history of this group. Also, she became a general as the second woman in Polish army. She survived the war and died in 2009.
She was a very brave person , who risked her life every day but she had the heart to fight. Her determination could be very valuable for many young nowadays.

Oskar Schindler is in my opinion one of the most inspiring people positively involved in WW2. He was an owner of the Emalia factory in Kraków, the place where Polish Jews were forced to work. But he wasn't like the other German people at all, he did a really great job helping prisoners to escape from ghetto and also trying his best to save as many people as he could. He died in 1974 and got burried in Jerusalem on a catholic cementary. In 1993 he was rewarded with the highest Israelian order.
He is the best example of a single person who can be in opposition to the whole establishment and still achieve a succes in doing great things.
M.S.

Probably one of the biggest heroes of II World War is Witold Pilecki. He was best known for his Witold’s Report, which was the first detailed report of the interior of the Auschwitz Camp, which before his report was believed to be a large prison, not a death camp. He was a very brave person - in 1940 he voluntarily went to Auschwitz Concentration Camp to infiltrate and write reports about the terrific conditions, they were there and survived 2,5 years. He escaped from there by the bakery door.
Witold Pilecki is a hero, because he was always helping others in order to make Poland free. He went to place with no return, knowing that he had kids and they may never see him again. He survived the war but was killed by the Soviet regime. We can now realize how much he had done for us.
B. Głuc

I think that the greatest hero of the World War II was James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, the superhero from the Marvel Universe. He was also known as "Winter Soldier". So, he was former soldier of the "107th Infantry Regiment". Also, he was best friend of Steve Rogers (Captain America). His regiment was captured by the forces of H.Y.D.R.A which was the nazi organisation. Actually, he was brain washed by HYDRA's scientists. They used him to eliminate the enemies and threaters. When he was going to eliminate Nick Fury, he accidentally met his old friend - Steve Rogers. The mission didn't succeed and Bucky revolted, killed the Red Skull. He went to the bright side of the force and joined the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D led by Nick Fury.

Very inspiring person who took part in Holocaust is Jan Karski ps. 'Witold'. He was born 24th of June in 1914. Polish and United States citizen, lawyer and diplomat, historian, university lecturer and professor at Georgetown University. Also he was secretary of the director of the Personnel Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Jan Karski was a courier and political emissary. He became famous of 3 reports about what was happening in Auschwitz. He got into the Warsaw Ghetto twice and then, disguised as a Ukrainian guard, he entered the camp, from which the Germans transported Jews to death. His reports Karski was preparing with his brother. This report was written in early February 1940 in Angers, written down by a courier. He was historically the second. First of all it was was considered missing. He was found and identified in the resources of the Sikorski Institute by Waldemar Piasecki. The last, third one was written
in early December 1942 in London and handed over to the Polish government. After his death he got an order. Karski was very brave and determined. I really admire him.
L.Nowak

In "Żegota" she performed functions related to helping children, smuggling them out of the ghetto and finding them shelter in a safe place. She could save over 2,500 children in this way.
Till the end of the war she was engaged in underground activities.

In my opinion, one of the bravest people during World War II is Witold Pilecki, a soldier of the Polish Army. He did an amazing thing - he got in and escaped from Auschwitz.
Witold was born on 13 May, 1901, in Ołoniec. He was a Polish cavalry officer, intelligence agent, and leader of resistance movement. Also, he was the author of first reports on Auschwitz.
He was one of the few people who managed to escape from the Death Camp.
