● Communication can be defined as the process
of understanding and sharing meaning.

● Process. A process is a dynamic activity
that is hard to describe because it changes.
● Understanding: “To understand is to perceive, to interpret, and to relate our perception and interpretation to what we already know.”
● Sharing. Sharing means doing something together with one or more people.
● Finally, meaning is what we share through
communication.

Eight Essential Components of Communication

● In order to better understand the
communication process, we can break it down
into a series of eight (8) essential components:
1. Source
● The source imagines, creates, and sends
the message.
● The speaker begins by first determining
the message.
● The second step involves encoding the
message.
● The third step is to present or send the
information to the receiver or audience.
● Finally by watching for the audience's
reaction, the source perceives how well
they received the message and
responds with clarification or
supporting information.

2. Message
●
“The message is the stimulus or meaning
produced by the source for the receiver or
audience.”

3. Channel
● “The channel is the way in which a message
or messages travel between source and
receiver.”
● Spoken channels include:
- Face-to-face conversations
- Speeches
- Telephone conversations
- Voicemail messages
- Radio
● Written channels include:
- Letters
- Memorandums
- Purchase orders
- Invoices
- Newspaper and magazine articles
- Blogs
- E-mail
- Text messages
- Tweets...etc

4. Receiver
● “The receiver receives the message from
the source, analyzing and interpreting
the message in ways both intended and
unintended by the source.”

5. Feedback
● Feedback is composed of messages the receiver
sends back to the source.

6. Environment
● “The environment is the surrounding where
you send and receive messages.”

7. Context
● “The context of the communication
interaction involves the setting, scene,
and expectations of the individuals
involved.”

8. Interference
● Interference, also called noise, can come
from any source. “Interference is anything
that blocks or changes the source's
intended meaning of the message.”
● Psychological noise is what happens when
your thoughts occupy your attention while
you are hearing, or reading a message.
● Noise interferes with normal encoding
and decoding of the message carried by
the channel between source and
receiver.

1. Intrapersonal Communication
● Intrapersonal communication involves
one person; it is often called “self-talk”.

2. Interpersonal Communication
● Interpersonal communication normally
involves two people, and can range from
intimate and very personal to formal and
impersonal.
Both scenarios
involve interpersonal communication, but
are different in levels of intimacy.

3. Group Communication
● Group communication is generally
defined as involving three to eight
people. The larger the group, the more
likely it is to break down into smaller
groups.

4. Public Communication
● In public communication, one person
speaks to a group of people; the same is
true of public written communication,
where one person writes a message to
be read by a small or large group.
● The speaker or writer may ask questions,
and engage the audience in a
discussion (in writing, examples are an e-
mail discussion).

5. Mass Communication
● Mass communication involves sending a
single message to a group.
● It allows us to communicate our
message to a large number of people,
but we are limited in our ability to tailor
our message to specific audiences,
groups, or individuals.
