Leonard Nimoy was an American actor, film director, photographer, author, singer and songwriter. He's best known for his iconic role of Mr Spock in Star Trek franchise which he played from a pilot episode in late 1964 to his final film performance in 2013.
Nimoy was born on March 26, 1931 in Boston as a son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. He started acting in the age of eight in children's theater. Later he enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse school of acting but quit after six months. Explaining this decision he said: "I thought, I have to study here three years in order to do this level of work, and I'm already doing better work". In 1953 he was enlisted in the United States Army Reserve but didn't resigned from acting. During his two years on military service Nimoy was still putting on shows with Army Special Services.
After returning from the service Nimoy started playing minor roles in B films and TV shows. He decided to be a supporting actor rather than take lead roles, an attitude he acquired from his childhood: "I'm a second child who was educated to the idea my older brother was to be given respect and not perturbed. I was not to upstage him... So my acting career was designed to be a supporting player, a character actor."
He's abandoned his ambitions to become a movie star but in 1965 Gene Roddenberry has cast him in his new visionary TV show. In next few years Star Trek has begun to gain more and more popularity and Nimoy was beloved by the audience for playing Spock. The character has become an icon in pop-culture and inspiration for many people. Nimoy took a big part in creation of the character. He was the one who came up with ideas of famous Vulcan nerve pinch and Vulcan salute which was based on Jewish greeting that actor has seen in synagogue as a child.
After finishing the work on Star Trek series in 1969 Nimoy was cast in multiple films and TV shows playing mostly supporting and episodic roles. He also dedicated a lot of his time for performing on stage. Ten years later he returned to the role of Spock in Star Trek: The Motion Picture which was the beginning of series of films continuing the plot of the show from 60's. Nimoy has appeared in all seven of them including Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home which he both starred and directed himself.
He had another occasion to show his directing skills in Three Men and a Baby but despite its financial success Nimoy didn't have ambitions to continue his directing career. He spent next years on voice acting and narrating numerous shows, programmes and video games. He was also fascinated with non-commercial arts like poetry and photography. He is an author of two autobiography books revealing painful details about hard periods in his life, including the fight with alcohol addiction, multiple poems and songs, and a highly controversial photo album depicting Nimoy's insight on women in Jewish culture.
In 2009 a Star Trek reboot was released and its director, J.J. Abrams has convinced Nimoy to make a cameo in it as Spock and become the bridge between the original and a new timeline . He returned to the same role in Star Trek. Into Darkness in 2012. This was his last on-screen performance.
The message about his death caused by complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in February 27th 2015 has shocked and genuinely saddened thousands of people around the world. This resulted in a huge response from his fans, friends and family members. A year later For The Love of Spock, a highly acclaimed documentary about Nimoy's life directed by his son Adam was released. In the same year a third part of Star Trek reboot Star Trek Beyond has came out. The film was dedicated to the memory of Anton Yelchin who also passed away during the production process and Leonard Nimoy himself. It contains a scene paying a tribute to Nimoy in which two Vulcan messengers inform one of the main characters about the death of Ambassador Spock who was portrayed by him up to the very end.
