Our first day in Korea marked a meaningful beginning to our cultural and academic journey. Upon arrival, we proceeded directly to Myongji College, where we participated in the official opening ceremony. The warm welcome we received, along with an informative introduction to the program, immediately set a respectful and engaging tone for the days ahead.

During the session, we were given an overview of Korea’s rich historical background and its diverse cultural heritage. This presentation provided valuable context, deepening our understanding of the country’s identity and evolution over time. A particularly memorable aspect of the day was the opportunity to wear the hanbok, Korea’s traditional attire. This experience allowed us to connect more personally with Korean history, as we engaged with a custom that reflects the country’s elegance, symbolism, and deep-rooted values.

Overall, the day served as a thoughtful and immersive introduction to Korean culture. It reminded us of the importance of cultural appreciation and openness, and it reinforced the significance of this journey—not merely as travel, but as a chance for meaningful learning and cross-cultural exchange.

- Zy <3

On our second day in Korea, we had the privilege of visiting SurplusGLOBAL, a leading company in the global semiconductor market known not only for its business innovation but also for its commitment to social impact. One of the highlights of our visit was meeting Mr. Bruce Kim, the CEO, whose leadership philosophy emphasizes sustainability, equity, and inclusive growth. He generously shared his vision for how businesses can be a driving force for positive change in society, which left a lasting impression on all of us.

During the visit, we were also introduced to Toktok, a subsidiary company under SurplusGLOBAL. Toktok plays a remarkable role in promoting social equity by creating employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Witnessing the operations of Toktok firsthand was both moving and eye-opening. The company has built an environment where people with developmental challenges are not only included, but also empowered through meaningful and dignified work. It was clear that Toktok is more than a workplace—it is a community that fosters confidence, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

This experience deepened our understanding of how companies can embody values of inclusivity and compassion while still achieving business success. SurplusGLOBAL and Toktok stand as powerful examples of how innovation and social responsibility can go hand in hand.

Our third day in Korea offered a dynamic mix of technological insight, cultural immersion, and meaningful social reflection. We began our day with a visit to the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), a pioneering smart city project that showcases Korea’s commitment to innovation and urban efficiency. At the Smart City Control Center, we observed how real-time data is used to manage city operations—including traffic control, emergency response, and public safety monitoring. It was remarkable to witness the coordination between advanced systems and human oversight, demonstrating how intelligent infrastructure can enhance daily life for residents.

Following the visit, we enjoyed our first taste of authentic Jjajangmyeon, a beloved Korean noodle dish featuring rich black bean sauce. Experiencing this traditional comfort food for the first time was both enjoyable and culturally enriching. The meal allowed us to connect with Korean everyday life in a casual yet meaningful way, reminding us that food plays an important role in understanding and appreciating a culture.

In the afternoon, we had the honor of meeting Dr. Myung Ken Lee, who provided an in-depth overview of South Korea’s healthcare system. He discussed the strengths of Korea’s universal healthcare model as well as some of the country’s most pressing social challenges—particularly the issue of mental health and high suicide rates, which continue to affect both young people and the elderly. Dr. Lee’s insights were eye-opening, shedding light on how societal pressures, cultural stigma, and gaps in mental health support systems contribute to this ongoing concern.

Reflecting on the day, we gained a well-rounded understanding of Korea—from its technological achievements and cultural richness to the complexities of its public health landscape. Day Three was a reminder that progress is not only measured by innovation but also by how a society cares for the well-being of its people.

- Zy <3

The day four of our journey in Korea brought us to MEK ICS, a leading company in the field of medical equipment manufacturing, particularly known for its innovation in ventilator technology. This visit offered us a rare and valuable opportunity to explore the intersection of engineering, healthcare, and patient care, all within the context of one of Korea’s key contributions to the global medical field.

During the tour, we learned about the company’s mission and history, including their significant achievement in developing Korea’s first domestically produced ventilator. It was both humbling and inspiring to witness this original model—an important milestone in the nation's medical history, especially considering the critical role ventilators have played in recent global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

What made the experience even more impactful was observing the manufacturing process firsthand. We were guided through the production floor, where skilled technicians and engineers worked with precision and care, assembling the complex components of these life-saving machines. It was impressive to see how technology, quality control, and human expertise come together to ensure that each ventilator meets the highest medical standards.

The visit to MEK ICS was not only an educational experience but also a powerful reminder of the essential role that medical technology plays in saving lives. It gave us a deeper appreciation for the innovation and hard work that happens behind the scenes—work that often goes unseen, yet makes a profound difference in healthcare outcomes around the world. As we continue to explore Korea’s advancements across various industries, today served as a testament to the country's commitment to healthcare innovation and its contributions to global well-being.

- Zy <3

It was fascinating to see how modern cosmetic products are conceptualized, developed, and brought to market through a combination of technology, strict standards, and skilled craftsmanship.

A highlight of the visit was meeting Mr. Lee Hoyoung, the CEO of New&New. He graciously took the time to engage with our group, answer our questions, and share his insights about the company’s mission, business strategy, and product innovation. His openness and leadership offered us a valuable perspective on the operations and challenges of running a global cosmetics company in a highly competitive industry.

As a thoughtful gesture of hospitality, the company presented each of us with a small token of appreciation—a sample of their cosmetic products. This not only allowed us to experience the results of their work firsthand, but also left us with a meaningful and lasting connection to the visit.

Overall, the tour of New&New was both educational and memorable.

I am still in the clouds thinking that this is not real because going to Korea is one of my biggest dreams. After we landed at the airport, my heart was pounding hard because I am feeling a lot of emotions. We arrived at Myongji College and they welcomed us with warm messages and orientation about what will happen to this 4-week program. One of the things that I liked the most that we did today was learning about the culture of Korea. It was indeed a memorable one because we get the chance to experience it first hand with the help of our presenters.

I learned a lot especially about the health practices and system of South Korea. The founding philosophy of Korea really touched me, "Hongik Ingan". It became my favorite phrase after the presentation. It emphasizes humanism and service to mankind. That is why Korea is one of the most successful countries now in the world. I will apply this to my everyday life and share it with my country. I really noticed the big difference in the status of the Philippines here in Korea because there's a lot of things that can be improved in our country.

- ali <3

This is my first day in South Korea, and I had the opportunity to immerse myself in Korean culture and learn about their healthcare system. The most memorable moment was when we wore hanbok—the traditional clothes of Korean people that symbolize their origin and culture. It was my first time, and I felt truly honored and part of the culture. I also noticed how their healthcare system strongly supports elderly care. Professor Boyoung Jeon’s lecture explained that Korea has an older population and they have elderly care system that supports elderly by taking care of them and their families through insurance. Even though the Philippines has a younger population, I believe it’s still important to build sustainable, long-term systems for all age groups and for all the population needs.

Today’s lectures and activities inspired me to be more passionate, patriotic, and respectful. Korea’s holistic elderly care made me hope that my country can apply the same approach someday.

-Jay~

Day 1 - Data about South Korea: Orientation and Culture

This week, we arrived in South Korea and began the program with orientation. The most memorable moment was landing at Incheon International Airport. It was my first time in Korea, and I immediately noticed how clean the environment was and how polite and focused people seemed.

Although we haven't discussed healthcare in detail yet, I observed some cultural differences, especially in clothing and behavior. For example, traditional Korean clothing like the hanbok is more conservative compared to traditional Filipino attire. This made me think about how culture shapes values and everyday practices.

One important topic we covered was South Korea’s growing elderly population and the country’s approach to long-term care. I learned the difference between caregiving institutions and hospitals, and the levels of care based on severity.

This experience made me more interested in elderly caregiving and its importance in public health. It also encouraged me to think about how I can help raise awareness and promote similar care systems in the Philippines. As a future health worker, I now see the value of learning from other countries and applying those lessons to improve healthcare back home.

Today’s most memorable moment was meeting the CEO of SurplusGlobal. His story and leadership were inspiring, especially in how he uses his position to create job opportunities for people with developmental disorders. This challenged the usual assumptions about workplace limitations for people with disabilities.

A noticeable cultural difference was how SurplusGlobal treats all employees equally, regardless of disability. In many places, people with disabilities face discrimination, but here, they are respected and given fair opportunities. This showed me how inclusive employment can be part of a healthier society.

One important thing I learned is that about 80% of people with developmental disorders experience depression, which impacts both them and their families. This highlights a serious public health concern that goes beyond physical health to include emotional and financial challenges.

I used to think success required perfection, but the CEO’s story reminded me that growth often comes from mistakes. This shifted how I view both leadership and personal development.

Today’s experience reinforced the importance of inclusion in public health. People with developmental disorders need supportive environments in families, schools, and workplaces. As a future public health professional, I see the need to reduce stigma, promote mental health, and ensure that everyone—regardless of ability—can contribute meaningfully to society.

The most memorable part of today was the tour with the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ). It was interesting to see how the integration of Seongna, Cheongdo, and Yeongjong supports economic growth not only in Korea but also in nearby countries. The scale and planning behind IFEZ showed how infrastructure can drive regional development.

A cultural difference I noticed today was how approachable and friendly Korean people are, regardless of their position or status. This openness made interactions more comfortable and meaningful.

In terms of healthcare, I learned that one well-implemented policy can have a strong impact, but even multiple policies will fail if people don’t follow them. This shows the importance of public awareness and education about healthcare regulations and their benefits.

One point that challenged my assumptions was learning that tropical diseases are uncommon in Korea due to the climate, making them less familiar to local doctors. This could pose risks for both patients and providers. It reminded me of the importance of continuous learning and research, especially in preparing for rare or unexpected cases.

Today’s experience deepened my interest in public health. Understanding Korea’s healthcare system made me reflect on the strengths and gaps in the Philippines. It encouraged me to explore how we can adapt effective practices to improve health outcomes in my own country.

Today, we visited Surplus Global, the world’s largest semiconductor equipment depot. The best part was the cluster rounding and job experience activity. We got to see different rooms on various floors and experience what it’s like to work there. Ms. Rose Lee, the marketing manager of Tok Tok, guided us, and we even met the CEO of Surplus Global. He shared his journey and how a small amount of money can make a huge positive difference in life.

One thing that really amazed me was their workplace, Tok Tok, where people with disabilities work without discrimination. They are treated just like everyone else, which is how it should be. Tok Tok has a great policy such as no daily quotas to meet, and workers can rotate through different roles to find what they’re most comfortable with. They don’t require special qualifications for hiring people with developmental disabilities. They accept them as regular employees, just like anyone else.

This is very different from the situation in the Philippines, where people with disabilities often face discrimination. I hope this mindset changes everywhere.

This visit to Surplus Global inspired me to continue my studies and find a job where people treat each other with respect, no matter their background or abilities. I really believe more countries should adopt practices like these for people with disabilities.

- ali <3

The most memorable moment today was learning about New&New’s patented lip tattoo product and the CEO’s role as a pioneer in BB cream research. It’s impressive how these innovations have shaped the cosmetic industry and gained popularity worldwide.

A cultural difference I noticed was how efficiently Koreans eat. I tend to eat slowly, and I clearly stood out as one of the last to finish. This showed me how much value is placed on productivity and efficiency here.

I also learned about the long process behind research and development. It can take around four years to develop a product, and quality checks are strict—any failure means batches must be recalled and retested.

A point that challenged my assumptions was about product expiration dates. I used to think products become unusable after that date, but the CEO explained that many skincare items last much longer, and expiration dates are set mainly for safety and regulatory reasons.

Overall, today’s session expanded my understanding of cosmetics and skincare. As a future global health practitioner, this knowledge could help me explore ways to promote skin health and potentially contribute to innovations that improve people’s well-being.

For our 2nd day in South Korea, we visited Surplus Global and had a meaningful experience through cluster rounding and job exposure. The company was very accommodating—they toured us around their facilities and let us try and observe the jobs they offer. The most memorable moment was learning about their commitment to offering job opportunities to persons with disabilities, inspired by the CEO’s personal story of having a child with autism. I was truly amazed by his perseverance and advocacy. I learned that public health is not only about healthcare services but also about inclusivity and giving everyone, including people with disabilities, a chance to work and live with dignity. This experience reshaped my thinking as a future public health practitioner—to be more connected with society and to carry with me the value of empowering marginalized groups through meaningful support.

-Jay~

I was really curious about today’s schedule, and it didn’t disappoint! First, we visited the IFEZ Building and its art gallery, which showcases the history of IFEZ. I was amazed by how the security systems in the three regions, Songdo, Cheongna, and Yeongjong they are carefully monitored. They use smart technology to keep the community safe.

In the afternoon, we learned about South Korea’s National Health Insurance Program. It’s very different from the Philippines. Their health insurance covers all medical bills, and they have many more healthcare workers, unlike in my country, where low salaries and lack of facilities can be an issue. I was also impressed by the national highway system that helps reduce delays during emergencies. They really prioritize health emergencies here.

Like the Philippines, South Korea has health centers in each district, which is also something we can improve back home.

I’m really inspired by what I’ve learned today and hope to bring this knowledge back to my country to help improve our healthcare system. A strong health system can improve everyone’s mental, physical, and social well-being.

- ali <3

Day 4: Innovation in Action: How Ventilators Are Made at MEK ICS

Today we visited the MEK ICS Company to learn more about their innovations that help people with breathing or lung problems. The most memorable part for me was the tour of their manufacturing area. I was really amazed by how they make ventilators, and how these machines can help save the lives of people who have trouble breathing. They showed us the step-by-step process of how the ventilators are made, starting from different sections. It was very interesting to see how clean and organized everything was. It made me realize how much work goes into making one machine that could help so many patients.

One new thing I learned today is how important it is to test and check the ventilators properly before using them. They have special machines, like the calibrator, to make sure the ventilators work the right way. This is a very important step because any small mistake could affect a patient’s life. I realized how serious and careful the healthcare industry must be, especially in making medical devices. As a future public health worker, I now feel more responsible to support innovations that can improve health.

- ali <3

I noticed that South Korea really puts a lot of effort and investment into skincare and cosmetics. That’s why many Koreans have good skin, along with their healthy lifestyle and genetics. In the Philippines, we don’t focus as much on cosmetics, and that made me realize how culture can affect people’s daily habits and values about self-care.

For me, the most memorable moment was when the CEO of New&New gave us a skincare gift package. I felt really happy and excited because I got to try cosmetics from another country. These products are well researched and made with care. I also enjoyed the question and answer part after they showed their advertisement video. The CEO shared the company’s story and how they work. It made me understand more about their passion and effort behind every product.

Today made me think that our government should really invest more in Research and Development, especially in health.

For the third day, we visited IFEZ and experienced how their security and hazard camera system works. The most memorable moment was seeing the live monitoring of cameras from above, just like in K-dramas—I was so amazed and happy to witness it in real life. I learned that Korea uses its advanced technologies wisely to boost both the economy and the healthcare system. Their discipline and government prioritization allow them to achieve so much. I also learned how Korea provides full health insurance coverage, strong support for healthcare workers, and good infrastructure like highways and railways to improve healthcare access. However, I was saddened to learn that many young Koreans struggle with mental health and suicide. This made me realize the urgent need to value mental health as much as physical and social well-being. Today’s experience strengthened my desire to become a globally aware and empathetic public health practitioner.

-Jay~

We headed to Myongji College for an opening ceremony, which included an introduction to what we are going to do for the whole program, and we also met the professors. I learned through Prof. Jeon that here in Korea, elderly care is highly prioritized. They have many systems that support elderly care, such as various insurances, which is a very good system. I am hoping that in the future, we can bring these elderly care systems to our country, the Philippines.

Another highlight of this day was learning about their culture and getting the chance to wear a hanbok—a Korean traditional dress. I also deeply appreciate the philosophy of "Hongik Ingan," which means 'to broadly benefit humanity.' It's a beautiful concept that resonates with the importance of contributing to society. Their accommodation brings a heartwarming atmosphere for me to withstand the odds of living in a foreign country for a month.

Furthermore, the cross-cultural session made me realize more about South Korea that has never been taught to us in training. It was a very enjoyable experience as it tackled many things that interested me. I thought that I would only see a hanbok in every KDRAMA that I had watched, but wearing one was ecstatic. Wearing traditional clothes while learning different appropriate manners made me feel like “필리핀 사람 아니에요, 한국 사람이에요”.

South Korea’s history was so rich that they even studied constellations firsthand before the Europeans. There are so many things that South Korea could offer not just nature but knowledge and wisdom as well. “호익인간” is a phrase that was always inclined with their history. I think that the phrase can also be part of humanity and health as well. I am here not just for me, I am here to fight for my advocacy, and that advocacy is to benefit all of the people.

~레브 ><

A great starter has begun with applause and awe. When you enter the vicinity of their company, you will see the phrase “we change the world together” . It is an optimistic mindset that has been engraved in my head ever since the journey started. Being able to meet the CEO humbly and respectfully entails to us the mission and vision of their company.

At first glance, it seems like just a normal company but as soon as we toured inside the company, he told his story. He was a father with a specially-abled child. He also said that his company had a rocky road before it was given the ability to rise. He sold his apartment to have investment money. With this, I am inspired to think that there is no such thing as giving up if your heart speaks more to what you want and need to have. Also, I am a fan of TWS Group,

I was very happy to be inside where they shot my favorite song of theirs, “PLOT TWIST”. I even took a photo there!

As we traveled inside, I was surprised when he said that they employ differently abled, specially abled, and abled bodies in their company. It touched me to think that this company values their employees while giving the best service to their consumers. This is the reason why I said that it is a unique company. After lunch, we grabbed coffee and headed to the office, where Mr. Kim began his introduction of what Surplus Global is. We also took a tour around the office and I was truly amazed by how beautiful and impressive the workplace was.

I was truly inspired by his words, especially his desire to give back to society, which is why he established the Smile Together foundation. It was there that I truly saw the philosophy of 'Hongik Ingan' in action, meaning 'to broadly benefit humanity.' He mentioned that he wants to build a long-term system and, even though it started with small steps, they aim to build a strong foundation for an institution that will last for decades, or even centuries, and continue to grow in the future. I love how they built a foundation that supports people with disabilities, giving beautiful chances to several individuals to live and be a part of society. From the start of their establishment, it has blown and grown towards unimaginable progress. With a goal of accomplishing much more population in this area by 2040, I believe that they were ready enough to accommodate all the investors. Not to mention their system, they also use biotechnology to run the zone. They are ahead of us and they are living in the future.

As soon as I stepped in their zone, loft buildings welcomed me. My acrophobia was triggered to think that we were going to enter one of those buildings. When I was in the elevator going up to the 33rd floor, I felt like my ears were tingling due to the rise of elevation. Upon walking outside the elevator, I saw a massive view of their economy and guess what, I forgot about my acrophobia. Also, they invited us to see the smart city via their security system. They forbid us to take pictures but it is like an investigative movie coming to life.

On the other hand, Mr. Myungken Lee discussed numerous health disparities in the health system of South Korea. He even compared their statistics to different countries like the Philippines. As a student studying in the health field, those that he discussed were a bit familiar and I love pondering more about that. Health issues like suicides, maternal mortality, infant mortality, tuberculosis, etc. must be addressed. Also, I have learned that South Korea faces underpopulation. If this event continues, the country will suffer in great distress with more elderly people working and few people thriving.

With this I am enlightened that even a skyline cannot resolve health issues but it can certainly help in other ways. New technology with advancing skills can address the problem of humanity. I hope that this country lowers the suicidal rates as it imoacts bith mental and physical health of the people living in it. I hope that the success of one positively impacts the other.

~레브 ><

I was truly curious about what IFEZ (Incheon Free Economic Zone) was, but upon touring the building, I quickly learned its purpose. They are building a city where technology leads in terms of economy, security systems, and emergency response. It's truly amazing how they've utilized their knowledge to create advanced technologies in a way that can boost their economic growth, enhance public safety, and improve the overall quality of life for residents and businesses within the zone.

One fantastic experience was observing their security cameras. I was standing in front of a frosted glass panel, and at first, you couldn't notice anything behind it. It was completely hidden. But then, when they flipped a switch or something maybe a button, the glass instantly turned transparent! We could see a massive screen displaying different views of the streets, buildings, and even monitoring people, along with thermal camera feeds. It was truly impressive.

In the afternoon, we met Mr. Myung-ken Lee. He discussed the status of health here in Korea and compared it to other countries, especially the Philippines. He clearly stated that we, as public health professionals, are needed by society to bring about change, help people live longer, and reduce the numbers of preventable diseases and health disparities. I strongly feel that we are truly needed by society, and we must help each other to strengthen our health systems.

~ems 🐽

Day 4 - MEK ICS: Breathing means Living

I know that breathing fresh air in a city might be hard because of industrialization. This feels like an ironic statement that it somewhat depends upon how much of a person is willing to live in it. MEK ICS is a ventilator company that produces advanced ventilation systems. Knowing that their company is the only company offering that kind of business in this country makes me wonder how they withstand all odds of getting their inspiration for this. With the guide of Mr. Kang Noah, he enlightened us on their history, progress, and future plans. I felt like I was in Grey’s Anatomy when I saw ventilating machines falling in line in front of me. It is so advanced that I even flinched when there was an automatic pump.

Furthermore, I have an opportunity to visit their manufacturing area. The process was so intricate that I carefully walked beside each component to not contaminate or make a fuss. There were so many electronics that I even felt dizzy on how the workers survive it everyday. In addition, the calibration of the machines kindled my curiosity to what extent that this company might offer. It was so detailed that it seemed so hard to learn. Upon entering the products that were already finished, the aging room symbolizes their generation of products to test and avoid errors. There was a time, Mr. Kang said that upon shipping the product, the product caught a fire and then the product was replenished.

In all, this company not only serves advancements, it also serves a more convenient approach to the people in need. It suffices for all necessities of ventilation. Also, for those who were not able to breathe properly, they were given a chance to survive and live more. Breathe until the world is meant to you. This will serve as my option and opportunity to become more immersed in health technology.

~레브 ><

Day 5: NewNNew | Unlearning, Learning, and Relearning what I Knew and You Knew

Health must be objective but beauty must always be subjective. I have a long story about cosmetology when I was still in my junior high school years. I was always curious on how a company formulated their products and where they get their raw resources. The NewNNew CEO along with our translator Mr. Lee enlightened us about their company. They were popular with Chinese consumers and were planning to expand through neighboring countries. The CEO tackled so much about their company and even told us about their future products to release. I was humbled when he showed us a product with real gold in it.

Consequently, we have been given the chance to visit their manufacturing area. I wore a protective coat and hair cap to avoid contaminating the place. The smell of the place is somewhat good in the nose. I have seen where the raw resources are stored and sorted, where the products are incorporated, the process, the packing, and storing. It is so intricate that we cannot be allowed to enter some parts of the factory. Also, we have been given the opportunity to look under what makes the production possible. We have seen the heater, water purifier, and other machines in the basement. It was a bit noisy so we went out for a minute.

Lastly, we did not expect anything but the thought of the CEO to give us a gift touched me surely. It was their products that have been in the market. At first, we joked that we did not need to go to Olive Young to buy skincare because we already have one. It is a great journey and they even invited us to eat with them. The CEO is very down to earth. The system in that company required passion and a strong nose to withstand the smell and string ears to protect it from loud machines. With this, this long week will be engraved in my heart as my substratum of my journey in the future.

~ 레브 ><

This company specializes in medical equipment, and they are the ones who make various models of ventilators. I felt very lucky to visit and see firsthand how ventilators are made, from the very start, through calibration, quality testing, and all the way up to packaging. Mr. Kang was very attentive to our questions and answered them thoroughly.

It was truly a great honor to have this day, as I realized the importance of local production – making your own products in your country.

My first day in Korea still feels so surreal to me. This has always been my mom’s big dream, and now I’m here, living it and making sure I make the most of this opportunity. I’m also representing BPSU as a Public Health student, with the goal of gaining knowledge and experience about the Korean healthcare system, which I hope to apply in my home country, the Philippines.

After we arrived in Incheon, our driver picked us up at the airport and brought us to Seoul. The roads were clean, and I noticed that everything in South Korea seems so urban-planned. There was no traffic either. As we approached Myongji College, I was amazed by everything I saw along the way, these are places I’ve only seen in K-Dramas, and now I’m here experiencing them in real life. When we entered Myongji College, I didn’t saw much students around, and it was because it’s currently summer. We were warmly welcomed by Ms. Da Eun, Prof. Yurii Lee, Prof. Seojung Yoon, Moonyoung, and Hakung. They gave us sandwiches and iced tea, which I really appreciated. Then, Prof. Yurii Lee oriented us about our agenda, duties, and responsibilities. Prof. Boyoung Jeon also gave us instructions related to our research. Then we had a lunch break, I was fascinated by the meal they provided, it was my first time eating a bento Korean-style. Even though the rice portion was small, it came with a variety of side dishes that made me feel full. The food was nutritious and delicious! After lunch, we continued with a session about Korean culture. I forgot the names of the speakers, but it was a fun and informative experience. One of the highlights for me was wearing the hanbok free! I’ve only seen it in K-Dramas, and now I finally got to wear one myself, They also gave us a korean culture book! As our agenda that day finish we went to our hotel to freshen up. We ender our day eating at a michelin restaurant with Moonyoung, who also gabe us a short tour around Myeongdong Street. After that, we returned to our rooms and call it a day!<<33

On our Day 2, We went to Surplus Global Company and be able to meet a professor but i forget her nameㅜㅜ she mentioned that Mr. Bruce Kim was his colleague back then.

As we travel to Surplus Global Company, I was ocnce again amazed by the long ride We passed through areas that looked more like peaceful countryside, just outside Seoul. It was sunny and calm, like a scene straight out of a Studio Ghibli film. When we arrived at the Surplus Global building, I noticed a short but meaningful message saying: “We need to change the world.” At first, I didn’t fully understand it, but as the day went on, I finally grasped its deeper meaning.

Mr. Bruce Kim gave us a very warm welcome. The company environment was refreshing, surrounded by greenery and farm-like areas, even though the building was huge and industrial looking. We were welcomed in their cafeteria, and it was my first time experiencing a Korean meal buffet-style, just like I’ve seen in Korean high school dramas! I was amazed that everything on my plate was delicious, I even sent a photo to my mom. I felt so happy that I finished everything! After the meal, we continued with our orientation. They shared the company’s history, and I learned that Mr. Bruce Kim had studied in the Philippines! If I remember correctly, he majored in mechanical engineering. Then they introduced us to one of their most touching programs: TokTok is a project designed to provide job opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs). TokTok really stood out to me. It’s not just a work program, it’s a movement that breaks the stigma against PWDs and shows that they can do meaningful work when given proper guidance and support. Surplus Global is doing an incredible job in shaping a more inclusive society. This deeply touched me, especially because in my country, the Philippines, similar opportunities are still very limited. As a future public health professional, I hope to contribute to improving occupational health in the Philippines. Surplus Global’s model inspires me, how they treat their employees with care, provide rest areas, and make sure they have fulfilling work experiences. We also got the chance to meet some of the TokTok employees, they were so sweet and cheerful, greeting us happily! We even took photos together. Later, we toured the company, and to our surprise, some K-dramas and K-pop shows had been filmed there!

I really hope that someday, I can do what Mr. Bruce Kim is doing for PWDs, to represent them, to prove that they can also do meaningful work like everyone else, and to help reduce the unemployment rate among PWDs in the Philippines. I want them to experience the value of being part of the workforce and living a more fulfilled life.

We ended our day at Surplus Global with countless photos and memories that made us smile.❤️

As I got out of bed and went through my morning routine having breakfast with my friends, taking a shower, and preparing for the day ahead. Being one of the students chosen for this incredible experience felt surreal, and I knew I wanted to make the most of every moment.

What made this day especially meaningful was our visit to meet Mr. Bruce Kim, the CEO of an organization that deeply values inclusivity and human dignity. Listening to his story was incredibly inspiring. He shared his personal journey with passion and purpose. His vision of creating an environment where individuals with developmental disorders are welcomed and empowered to work, live, and thrive as individuals was truly amazing. It made me think about how much potential every person has, regardless of their background or condition.

What struck me the most was how Mr. Kim didn’t just speak about inclusion he lived it, promoted it, and made it a core part of his leadership. Observing the workplace he helped build, where people are treated with respect and given real opportunities, made me reflect deeply. It showed me that meaningful change begins with compassion and the courage to act. His powerful words, “We change the world together,” might sound simple at first, but to me, they hold a much deeper meaning.

Today, I realized that if we as a collective regardless of our nationality, status, or differences choose to stand up for equality and inclusivity, we can build a more sustainable and impactful society. This experience has not only challenged my perspective but also inspired me to reflect on the kind of global health practitioner and person I want to become.

-Sirdo🎐

The day where it all began felt like stepping into a dream one I used to imagine and now I was finally living it. It was my very first day in South Korea, a country I’ve always dreamed of visiting, and being here. I’ll always remember this moment as one of my core memories,a meaningful start to a journey that blends both culture and learning, and one that I’ll carry with me forever.

When we arrived at Myongji College, I immediately felt the warmth and sincerity of our welcome. The faculty treated us not just as visitors, but as part of their community. From the moment they offered us food to the way they patiently guided us through everything, I felt a sense of belonging. The introduction, receiving my name where it felt like I am included in this incredible opportunity. It marked the beginning of an exciting chapter where I knew I would learn, grow, and connect with people.

During the orientation, they explained the rules, our itinerary, and the activities planned for us. It was exciting, and I couldn’t wait for it to happen. But what truly stood out that day was our first lecture, led by Boyoung Jun, about Korea’s elderly care system. I was genuinely amazed at how thoughtfully and systematically Korea supports its aging population. It opened my eyes to how much effort is needed to build a society that respects and protects the elderly valued as part of the community.

After lunch, I got the chance to try HANBOK for thr first time! and that gave me happiness that finally, I wore hanbok. Together, a lecture about korean culture and manners where they also teach us the proper way of giving respect to one another, they also gave us books that we can read when we have our free time.

Looking back, my first day wasn’t just the start of a trip. It was the beginning to learn, but already, I’ve gained so much more than I expected.

-Sirdo🎐

On our second day in South Korea, we went to SurplusGLOBAL, and they gave us a really warm welcome. They told us all about their company, what they hope to do in the future, and the great work they are doing.

What truly stood out was their main goal: to give jobs to people on the autism spectrum. Mr. Bruce Kim, the CEO, was very humble and down-to-earth. I really look up to him for that! He even treated us to drinks at their cafe and lunch in their cafeteria.

We also learned about Toktok's, a special part of their company. Its logo is a blue hedgehog, which stands for people with autism. Hedgehogs are often shy and hide to protect themselves, just like some people with autism might be more quiet or reserved. Toktok's aims to be a "standard workplace for the disabled who dream of a 'happy workplace' for the disabled and non-disabled." It's truly inspiring to see a company so dedicated to making a welcoming and supportive place for everyone.

— 란즈 :^)

Day 3 : IFEZ & Introduction to Korea Healthcare Delivery System

On our Day 3, we went to Incheon Free Economic Zone. It is an advanced free economic zone where people can start businesses, encourage innovation, and promote international cooperation. When we arrived, they gave us a warm welcome along with the CEO, and they introduced us to their history, city rules, and the advanced technology they apply in their city. With this technology, they are able to reduce car accidents, speed up emergency ambulance response, have firehouse indicators, and maintain a good surveillance system in the community.

After that, they gave us a short tour on the 36th floor of a building. From there, we saw the three islands they built which are Songdo, Yeongjong, and Cheongna. They mentioned that each island specializes in different fields like biotechnology, information technology, logistics, aviation, and smart city development. I really hope that the government in the Philippines can also implement these kinds of innovations, so that people in our country can experience a better environment and build a future with more ease.

After we went to IFEZ, the CEO treated us to a very nice meal. It was my first time trying jajangmyeon, and I was really thankful and blessed to be able to experience this. I hope that all the insights and learnings I gain here can be something I contribute back as a future public health professional in the Philippines.

After lunch, we met Mr. Myungken Lee who introduced us to the Korean healthcare delivery system. I gained a lot of insights from his talk. I understand that their healthcare system works well because their economic growth is so fast compared to the Philippines. Mr. Myungken Lee also showed us some epidemiological statistics, and I was surprised by the huge differences in indicators such as teenage pregnancy, life expectancy at birth, infant mortality, and others. However, it was sad to learn that Korea has a high suicide rate, but I believe they can improve this in the future.

He also mentioned that Korea has many healthcare delivery facilities such as hospitals and public health centers. He even gave us a mini mission for when we go to Busan, which is to check out a public health center there and ask questions about their public health strategies.

After our session with Mr. Myungken Lee, we went our separate ways and ended the day by eating beef with Moonyoung and Hakung, then went back to the hotel to rest.

On our Day 4, we went to a company that develops and manufactures ventilators for respiratory care systems. It was really an honor to visit them because they are the first and only company in Korea that produces domestically made intensive care ventilators.

They told us their company history and showed us their promotional video, which I found interesting because I also enjoy video editing. After that, they toured us around their company. I liked that even though they use advanced machines, they still involve manpower. I think it’s important that there’s still human work involved, with the help of biotechnology, to make sure it’s effective for both people and society.

We continued with a short Q&A session and were able to witness how the ventilators are produced, programmed, and packed. It was really amazing to see the full process.

After the tour, we went to their cafeteria and experienced another Korean buffet-style meal. We ate a lot and had fun talking with one of their staff members. I forgot his name, but he could speak English, so we enjoyed chatting while eating our food. After lunch, we took a picture with their CEO and they gave us some tokens, which I truly appreciated.

As a future public health practitioner, I hope that one day our country, through researchers in public health and biotechnology, can also produce equipment like these ventilators. It makes me sad that many Filipinos suffer from poor respiratory health due to smoking, alcohol, and e-cigarette use. Having access to machines like these could help save lives. We never know who might need them someday.

On our last agenda for this week, we went to the company New&New Co. Since I’m very fond of skincare, I prepared some questions related to their CEO, who has a background in chemical engineering.

As he shared the company’s history, he also gave some insights about skincare, not just to make people beautiful, but also how it can help in treating skin cancer cells. I asked about their refinery system, and they explained how it helps reduce chemical pollution. This allows them to produce skincare products that are not harmful to the environment, which I found very impressive. After that, we had a short tour around the company’s manufacturing system. We wore lab gowns and hairnets, just like when we do our analytical chemistry labs. We were able to observe how their staff performed their specific jobs in each part of the process. At one point, the CEO generously gave us free skincare products. It was a really expensive one, and I plan to give it to my mom, I’m sure she’ll be so happy to receive it.

After the tour, we shared a meal with the CEO, our very kind driver, and of course, Moonyoung and Hakung. It was a lovely way to end the visit. After eating, we said our goodbyes to the CEO. It was truly an honor to meet him. He was so generous and welcoming.

Our third day in South Korea started with a visit to IFEZ (Incheon Free Economic Zone). They shared with us the history of IFEZ, their goals, and how they manage everything. We were especially impressed by their security system. They showed us how their CCTV cameras watch everything 24/7 to prevent crime and record any accidents. They also took us to a place where we could look out over the buildings and establishments that IFEZ had.

After IFEZ, we met Mr. Myungken Lee, who is a doctor and a professor at the Graduate School of Public Health in Kosin University. He talked about the differences in healthcare across countries, especially in Asia. He explained how Korea manages to have low rates of things like infant mortality (babies dying), maternal mortality (mothers dying during childbirth), and other health issues.

Professor Lee also asked us how we think South Korea could lower its suicide rate, which was a very thoughtful question. After our meeting, he kindly took us to the Gangnam District in Seoul. We got to walk around and had dinner there before returning to our hotel.

— 란즈 :^)

This company makes and ships ventilators all over the world. They are known for creating highly advanced and innovative ventilators.

During our visit, they showed us the very first ventilator the company ever made, up to their newest models, and even a peek at future products they plan to release. They also have a special showroom where all the ventilators they've made over the years are displayed, with the year they were produced.

We learned about the entire process of making a ventilator, from the monitor to all the other parts. They also showed us how they thoroughly test each ventilator before packing it. An interesting detail we learned was that they use different power plugs to match the country where each ventilator will be shipped, ensuring it's ready to use.

After the meeting, we ate lunch in the company's cafeteria, and the food was delicious! Before leaving, they gave us cute ID holders as a gift to thank us, which made us very happy. We took some photos, and then our agenda for the day was complete.

— 란즈 :^)

안녕하세요!! It’s the last day of the week, and even now, I still can’t believe I’m actually in Korea. Like the past few days, I started my morning with breakfast alongside my friends, took a shower, and got ready for another full day. Everything felt like part of a normal routine until we arrived at a place that left a lasting mark on me.

As we traveled to the New&New Corporation, I couldn’t help but admire the tall buildings and stunning cityscapes surrounding us. When we arrived, the company welcomed us with an introduction and a video documentary that gave us an overview of what New&New does and how their natural products impact people around the world.

But what really stood out to me was the guided tour inside their actual factory. It was so fascinating to see the process up close from researching the ingredients, carefully preparing and mixing them, to packaging and distributing the final products. I never imagined how much science, care, and detail goes into something as simple as skincare.

This experience reminded me how innovation and health can go hand in hand. It inspired me as a student to appreciate the work behind health products and motivated me to keep learning.

Hi, hello, hey, Mabuhay South Korea! Ever since I was a child, I have always loved K-pop because dancing like a K-pop idol and performing their songs gives me so much confidence. However, it was always just a fantasy dream to go here and roam around. When my program announced that I was included on the list of students who would be going to South Korea, I didn’t know what to feel. It was like, for real?! And then one moment, I was on the airplane and then boom! I am now breathing the same air that South Koreans are breathing.

After arriving at Incheon International Airport, we went directly to Myongji College, the school that has a very special space in my heart. Without them, I would not be able to achieve one of my very dreams. They welcomed us with their warmest smiles and happiest tones. I was able to meet Ms. Yuri Lee, one of the people behind this very successful program. She welcomed us and further explained the mission we needed to do during our stay, and then introduced all the professors and persons in charge. I met Monyoung-ssi and Hakyung-ssi.

After the introduction, we had our lunch, the very first lunch and proper meal after our take-off hehe. 맛있어요! I was very full. I loved all of it! Then we went straight to the lecture on Korean Culture. It was lit! I was out of words to say. And then we arrived at my favorite moment, we wore a hanbok! Yey! It was a dream come true for me. I felt like I was connected to South Korea! We also tried their traditional tea and those chewy rice cakes (which I forgot the name of, huhu). They also taught us how to bow like South Koreans, and then we told each other our wishes.

The first day went very smoothly. After the lecture, we checked in our luggage and then had our very first dinner here in South Korea! We ate Kalguksu, it was very delicious!

WAAAAAAAH, I AM IN SOUTH KOREA!

This day, we visited Surplus Global, and one of the highlights was learning about their project called Toktok. It's a program specifically built for persons with disabilities. The workplace was really welcoming and inclusive, and it was amazing to see how they let people with disabilities work like everyone else, treated with respect and dignity.

The most memorable moment for me was hearing the story behind the Toktok project. The CEO has a child with autism, and that personal connection really touched me. It inspired him to create opportunities for others in similar situations. It made the whole project feel so heartfelt and meaningful.

I learned how important inclusivity is in workplace health and social care. Seeing a company take action to support persons with disabilities reminded me that public health isn't just about medicine, it's about creating safe and supportive environments for everyone. I also got to experience Korean buffet-style eating for the first time during lunch, which was super exciting! Everyone was so kind and the vibe was really light and happy.

This experience made me reflect more deeply on how I want to approach public health in the future. I realized how powerful it is when personal stories turn into impactful programs. I want to help build initiatives like this ones that are inclusive and genuinely make a difference in people’s lives.

Today, we visited IFEZ—the Incheon Free Economic Zone—which is known as a smart city. It was my first time seeing such advanced technology up close. I honestly thought cities like this only existed in movies!

The most memorable part was seeing their high-tech security systems. They had thermal cameras that can detect heat and fire, and smart security cameras that can read vehicle plate numbers and even recognize faces to track possible suspects. It was mind-blowing!

In the afternoon, we had a lecture on South Korea’s public health situation. I was surprised to learn that the country has a high suicide rate and an extremely low birth rate. These are serious issues that affect Korea’s long-term population and mental health landscape. It made me think about the challenges that come with rapid modernization.

Seeing IFEZ made me realize how far technology can go in creating safe, smart communities. I hope one day, my country can also adopt this level of innovation to improve public safety and quality of life. At the same time, learning about Korea's public health issues reminded me that even the most advanced places still face serious social and health challenges. It deepened my commitment to becoming a public health practitioner who looks at both progress and people’s well-being.

Today, we visited MEK ICS, a company that develops respiratory machines and exports them worldwide. It was an eye-opening experience to see how advanced medical technology is developed and produced in Korea.

The highlight of the visit was when they introduced OmniOx, a respiratory machine that played a major role during the COVID-19 pandemic. It felt like an honor to be in the very place where life-saving technology was born, something that helped people all over the world in such a critical time.

I learned how vital innovation is in public health, especially in respiratory care. It made me realize how essential it is to invest in health technology and be prepared for public health emergencies.

This visit really inspired me. Knowing how Korea contributes globally in respiratory care made me hope that the Philippines can also focus on creating health technologies, especially with our high smoking rate and respiratory cases. I want to be part of a future where my country can produce life-saving machines too, not just import them.

Day 5: Sustainability and Beauty: A Visit to New&New Corporation

It’s the last day of the week! We visited a company called New&New Corporation, which specializes in creating cosmetics and skincare products using natural science. Their focus is on producing items that are not only effective but also environmentally friendly.

The most memorable part for me was learning how they use innovation to protect both the consumer and the environment. It was refreshing to see a company in the beauty industry that prioritizes sustainability over profit.

I learned that public health can also be connected to self-care and environmental responsibility. The products we use daily, like skincare, can have long-term effects on our health and the planet. Korea’s approach to combining technology, beauty, and sustainability was truly impressive.

This visit made me more conscious of the products I use and the importance of supporting sustainable brands. It also reminded me that public health isn't just about hospitals and medicine, it's also about lifestyle, wellness, and caring for our environment. I hope to promote this kind of thinking in future health programs in the Philippines.
