In learning more about SEL through researching its importance within the classroom, and student achievement, its made me realize that ELL students need the most support within this area as they come from many circumstances in which they must adjust and learn a new language, leaving behind their place of origin and friends to now move beyond experiencing a cultural shock. Therefore as a future educator its important for me to implement culturally relevant pedagogy, along with setting in place rules of respect and moments where students can interact with one another to celebrate diversity within the classroom

Therefore, this is personally meaningful to me in terms of keeping this in mind to embed within my instructional practices when teaching ELLs online, and ensuring that when I plan lesson and activities that I’m being mindful of the social components needed to best support the students, looking at the “whole child” rather than only the cognitive.

"One way to encourage growth mindset in English learners is building stamina in instruction through chunking information for specific amounts of time. For example, students who are easily frustrated during instruction may need shorter time spans at first to digest complex concepts and instruction. Through failure, students learn what does not work or decide on more efficient and effective methods and strategies they can use to develop content and language knowledge and skills. The more explicit we are regarding students' growth over time, the more likely they are to connect the work and effort they are putting in to their success and achievement."

If learnt that some people believe the key to encouraging a growth mindset in students is to praise effort, rather than providing empty feedback to students through simple praise such as "good job" or "nice work." While effort, and providing students feedback on effort is helpful, it is not the complete picture. English learners in particular may already be working hard, and depending on the instruction they are receiving, they may not be making the progress in content and language that is necessary for success. Ive realized that as an educator I play a vital role in if ELLs create a growth or fixed mindset. In order to students to change their mindset, it starts from the ways in which i change mine when working with an ELL. For example; Instead of saying "my ELLs cant speak English", i need to change that notion to "What languages can my ELLs speak?", also moving from "My ELLs arent able to read on grade level" to "How can i accommodate this text? What resources are available?". Its simple methods like this that truly allow the student to feel capable and motivated by their teacher and to set a growth mindset for themselves
