It's like when you expect a sunny day for a picnic but it rains instead – that's ironic because it's the opposite of what you hoped for. 

In Chapter 2 of "Fish Cheeks" Amy Tan wrote  "When I found out that my parents had invited the minister's family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried."

The statement "...I cried." is ironic because most people would be happy or excited about a Christmas Eve dinner invitation, but the person in the story is upset instead, which is the opposite of what we'd expect.
