A: Ask a question, can they respond. Inspect rise and fall of chest, inspect airways for obstruction.
B: Listening for speech and breath sounds, rate, depth and efficiency of breathing. Auscultate. Inspect position, use of accessory muscles.
C: Palpate radial (or carotid) pulse for rate and strength. Assess central capillary refill by palpating sternum.
D: Evaluate conscious state using GCS. BGLs, check pupils. Inspect level of activity and mobility.
E: Inspect skin for integrity, warmth, colour. Full body check to inspect for other injuries. Keep patient warm.
