Deep fakes are one of the new inventions of our age. They are able to alter the appearance and voice of people in things such as videos and use it to spread misinformation or for other means of self gain or memes. They are made mainly by a type of AI that uses a type of method called deep learning. Deep learning works by getting fed lots of information about the person you're trying to deepfake and then creates the image or video through an algorithm.

Deepfakes can be used for various means which can range from inoffensive and funny to disgusting.

Blackmail: They can generate a fake video, photo or audio of you doing or saying something that is wrong and use it as a blackmailing material.
Scams: People are now getting scammed by people saying that they are a famous person that needs money or wants you to invest money on them and using deepfakes as fake proof that they are real.
Memes: people use deepfakes for things such as songs or meme videos for fun.
Pornography: People use deepfakes to replace the porn actor for whoever they want which is normally a famous person.
Politics: It can be used to spread political ideas through making the politicians look like famous person

How do they work

They use GANs that are composed of a discriminator and a generator the generator generates the deepfakes and the discriminator needs to detect if its fake during this process they get better at it, to the point that the deepfake is indistinguishable

How are Deepfakes created?

1, Face swapping: Mainly used by pornographic websites and adult movies.

2, Facial manipulation: Mostly used in videos pranking government officials or famous celebrities.

3, Motion-motion transfer: Transferring the corporal motion of one to another.

deepfakes are mostly bad because of misinformation, this technology can also be used in scams and worst of all political manipulation these deepfakes are a dangerous tool

What is good about them?

These deepfake videos and other images are incredibly easy to make. Also, deepfake models can be used in hospitals to protect the real identity of a patient. they can also easily spread but this mass spreading of missinformation can be good if used correctly. Because this missinformation can be at least half-true to reach more people and maybe used for promoting something.
