One of the most famous crafts when it comes to the day of the dead is wire and clay sculptures.

Wire and clay sculpture
Materials:
• 1 wood base
• A palm-sized amount of polymer, air-dry or bread dough clay
• 18-gauge wire, needle nose plier, wire nippers
• Assorted fabric scraps, trims
• Hot glue
• Paint

Directions
1. Using the needle nose pliers, create a body frame (one strip of with with two arms and two legs) from the wire.
2. Take a pinch of clay and form in an oval and apply as a foot by inserting into the wire. Repeat for other foot and hands.
3. Take a larger piece and form it around the center area of the center wire.
4. Take another chunk of clay and form a skull head, slide it on the top portion of the wire. Bake or air-dry, depending on the type of clay you are using.
5. Glue the sculpture to the wood base by the feet.
6. Pain the body and clay portions.
7. Add fabric scraps for clothing.

Tips and variations: Create objects by using cardboard and other found objects.

Supplies:
-1 plastic skull mold
-Mixing bowl and spoon
-(2 cups) granulated sugar
-(2 teaspoons) meringue
-(2 teaspoons) water
- 1 piece of cardboard (5x5)
Directions:

Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl first. Sprinkle water in the bowl and continue mixing. Keep mixing till the sugar is moist and to the consistency of moist sand. Scoop the sugar and place it in the molds firmly and evenly. Take the piece of cardboard and flip the molds over onto the cardboard till the skulls pop out. Quickly but carefully place them on a flat surface. Let them dry for at least 24 hours.

Icing

• 2/3 cup of water
• 1/2 cup meringue powder
• 2 pounds of powdered sugar
• Electric mixer
• Concentrated food coloring (the kind professional cake bakers use)
• 1 pastry or Ziploc bag
• Plastic cups

• Spoon

For the Icing:

Blend the ingredients with an electric mixer until the peaks form in the icing. If using assorted colors, scoop the white icing into separate bowls and add a dab of different colored food coloring in each one. Mix again. Scoop the icing into the pastry or Ziploc bag (snip the corner for the latter). Continue until you have several bags of different colors. Keep sealed and refrigerated until use.

One food that is eaten on the day of the dead is mole negro or dark mole. This dish is very complex and takes over an hour to complete. There are so many ingredients and steps involved in this dish that the preparation takes around 50 min alone if everything goes right. Flowers
The altar is decorated with fresh flowers as it is believed that their scent will make the returning souls feel welcomed and happy. The flowers use depends on local costumes, local availability and financial capacity.

The cempasuchil or flor de muertos (flower of the dead) is one of the most used flowers during the celebration ; in some places its petals are set to make a path from the house door to the altar thus showing the way to the returning souls.
Different Levels
In some areas altars are made with two levels that symbolize heaven and earth; in others they are made with three levels for heaven, purgatory and earth; and there are places where altars with seven levels are placed, each of these levels represents the steps a soul has to make to get to heaven.
An Arch
Symbolizes the entrance to the world of the dead. In the places where it's set it can be made with cempasuchil flowers like in Michoacán State, or of reed like in Puebla State.
Chiseled Paper
The papel picado are paper flags chiseled with saints' figures or skulls and skeletons that are placed like a table cloth in the altar. To some people they represent the element air for the way they move.
Day of the Dead Bread pan de muertos is different in every region of the country and one of the most important elements in the altar as it is a fraternal offering to the souls in the catholic sense.
