For now, I will upload weekly work under the suggested work tab and I will create a tab for each week containing helpful and useful resources related to the work the children will be completing for that week. Creating these tabs each week will fill the padlet with lots of new content which can be confusing but if you simply look for the date of the week the children are working on you should find any relevant resources for the week underneath the tab heading. This week we will be working on time, we have completed the chapter Time 1 which you can revise before starting chapter Time 2. Time can be a tricky concept in maths so having a clock at hand or even making a clock can be very helpful. I will also try to put up some extra support material under the week 2 tab. I have also added a check-up page which contains questions about topics we have covered already to see how the children get on with them.

This week we will be working from Abair liom D so just remember that when you are looking for the resources on folensonline. In maths we would usually use a lot of hands on activities to support the learning and most materials can be found in the home for e.g.: rice or pasta as counters to help with sums or everyday 3-D shapes found in the home, so don’t be afraid to use them.

This week in school would’ve been a very special week for our 2^nd class as we would have been preparing for our First Holy Communion on Saturday. I know this is not what we had expected but I would just like to remind you all that you will without a doubt get your special day to celebrate! Ms Power and I have been busy trying to create a special page for your scrapbook to mark this date. We would love if you could all have a look at these (Religion Tab), decorate them and stick on/draw a picture of yourself. I hope you will keep them somewhere safe until we can stick them into our scrapbook!

This week we will be working on Money 2. Setting up a shop at home with price tags in cent and euro to calculate costs and change can be quite helpful when working on the topic of money. Role play shopping, calculating amounts, exchanging coins and receiving change are some ideas to do at home. Lots of hands-on activity in exchanging coins is important before moving on to calculating change.

This week we will be working on the topic of weight. Finding and sorting items at home into heavy or light; that are lighter or heavier than a given object will be very helpful this week. In school we would use a balance scales to weigh items whereby if an object is heavier than the other, this side will drop. I know this would not be found in many households, so I have included an interactive activity which involves using this type of scales. Using real life items such as a bag of sugar, flour, pasta etc. is important to help children to become familiar with what 1kg feels like.

There is an interactive game called pleasc an balún found on folensonline when you click the lesson Súil Siar 4 which will help to revise some of our vocabulary.

I have included a link to a number of stem challenges for kids which I think the boys and girls in my class would love to try. These summer STEM Challenges are great fun whatever the weather and all use materials you’ve probably already got around the house! ✅

As Friday would have been our sports day in school, I thought that instead we could join Twinkl’s eSports week this week! This lovely set of challenge cards specifically designed for Twinkl Ireland eSports Week 2020 will keep your children engaged and active with fun challenges. Submissions are now open and will close on the 18th June at noon. 

I hope you all enjoyed last week! I know the weather wasn’t great especially for eSports Week but I must say I received some fantastic ‘Sports Day at Home’ news and it seems everybody made a huge effort so well done! As we are coming towards the end of the year and finishing our workbooks the suggested work list might be a small bit different so just keep an eye on that. I will also be asking for the return of our rental scheme books in the next few weeks so for now if you could just pop a name sticker on those books and keep them safe until I have a list and a date for this to happen, Thank you!

Again, just to remind everybody that this is a list of suggested work, don’t worry about getting everything completed just do your best because that is always more than enough 😊 I hope you all enjoy some of the different activities this week!

- Just Phonics: For phonics from now on I would encourage lots of revision, I will list a variety of options for this, and if you haven’t done it already encourage your child to try the assessment pages to see how they get on. 

- Writing: Handwriting Practice (1/2 a page per day); Independent/Free Writing – just like you do in class…writing your news, a new poem, a story, a new recipe, a joke etc. 

- Reading: I would encourage all the boys and girls to continue reading over the next few weeks, as you can learn lots of new things from reading books! Lots of resources for reading can be found under the English tab. Don’t forget about the five-finger test (found under the English tab) to ensure you pick a book that suits you!

I would strongly encourage all the boys and girls to continue to practice their maths skills. The first thing I would recommend is that the children go back over their maths book and complete any of the pages that might not yet be completed. I have lots of recommendations under the maths tab on this padlet which will help to provide some ideas also. I have included activities from a different maths book, similar to our work it out, which allows the children to practice short maths questions from Monday to Friday this week✅

- Super Sleuth Workbook (online): I will include a link to this book in the Week 9 tab if you would like to try it out. This book gives the children lots of opportunities to practice activities around problem solving, which can be a difficult area in maths.✅

- IXL activities, www.topmarks.co.uk (revision)

- Revision of tables: The children have now covered all their addition and subtraction tables so they can use the table games found under the maths tab or their tables book to revise them. Table Experts online workbook can be found under the week 5 tab!

I have seen some excellent progress made by children on the Readtheory and they have received lots of knowledge points so well done to those 😊. If you haven’t already do make sure to complete the pre-test and another quiz (you will find a post about Readtheory under the English tab if you’re not sure). If you are signed up, you can complete another quiz this week or more if you would like to!

Create this easy necktie greeting card for someone special, it could be a sister, brother, family member, neighbour etc., it’s your choice. There is a step by step instruction guide under the week 9 tab and the printable necktie templates are included here also! When you are finished crafting don’t forget to give or send it to the person you made it for 😊  ✅

Children can work away with any the resources found under each of the tabs, it’s great to see everybody is doing so many different activities from these areas so well done 😊

This year will be your first ever virtual school tour! It’s not the same as visiting a place in person, but we are so lucky that we have technology that allows us to visit places online. We will be visiting San Diego Zoo which will be fun as it is in a different country. I have included a PowerPoint that will guide you through the tour and some activity sheets to go with it. There are lots of different parts, we won’t get around to all of them but you can go back and visit again with your family.  ✅

You could also choose your favourite animal from the zoo and create a small project about it using pictures and facts about the animal that you choose!
