For many teacher curriculum's this book is crucial for students to understand the actual tribulations that Jewish families had to experience during this horrific period. This book was initially just a diary from the point of view of a teenager while she was in the midst of hiding and fighting for her life in a world that felt she was not supposed to be here. This book is graphic in the way it describes what she was truly experiencing. Issues behind this book arose in 2011 when parents of students began to feel as if the book was too graphic because of the sexual terms that was mentioned. The issue spread throughout multiple school districts in the United States because it spoke about sexual relations and homosexual relations. To me the real reason parents were upset about this book is because it is not a fairy tale and it does not have a happy ending. As a society we often times only want to read our children stories where the man and the woman get married at the end and have the happiest life. But, with this story a family has to hide their true selves in order to survive, they also have to face issues they are put in because of who they are which goes against what parents "want" their kids to read. As a result of many parents complaining and arguing about the book, the book was taken out of many school district curriculum's and was replaced by less graphic YouTube videos to describe what happened during the Holocaust. In my opinion, this is completely wrong. I had the privilege of reading the book word for word. Yes, the book is graphic and sad and scary and absolutely horrific but the essence of the book teaches you everything you need to know about the Holocaust. There is nothing that teaches you more about a situation or a time period than a true first hand experience. The Holocaust was not a censored event and it showed no remorse to Jewish people so it is only right that the story is not cookies and cream. This is by far one of the best books I have ever read in my life, not because of the actual event in the book, but because of how real it actually was and how well it was written. The book talks about an eleven- year old boy, Jonas, living in a society where everyone is the same. There is no war and there is no pain. But in addition to the "peaceful" society they live in, their is no individuality or color. But as the book develops, Jonas receives the job of the "Memory Receiver" and he is passed down memories from "The Giver." He then learns the true horrors of the society he lives in. He learns that a baby that his family is caring for will be killed because of his poor condition. He also learns that not only will the baby die, but the adults of the society kill the elderly and kill the sick people. The book is frowned upon by parents because it mentions suicide and discusses lethal injection along with a few more graphic scenes. This book was first banned in 1994 in California because it mentioned violent and sexual passages. This is another book that should not have been banned. I read this book when I was in the 7th grade and although this book is fictional to me in some societies this is their reality. For the United States we live in a country that embraces color and loves our babies and even our old people, and when we have a sick mom or a sick child we use every resource possible to ensure their health. But, in some countries, it is the opposite. For many book writers they use their books to reach a new audience, they use their books to shed light on things that we may be unfamiliar with and Lois Lowry did just that. Although the book discusses suicide and murder, those are real life situations that people in certain societies or ethnic groups can be placed in.
