  • Fluency is reading at an appropriate speed and accuracy of the content being read.  Expression of the words in the proper written flow will play an important roll in fluency.

    • Fluency will take the students level into consideration by assigning specific task cards to the students to recite to each other and the teacher.  This will involve small groups but placing students with similar fluency levels together will be important.  Staggering students to higher cards when they successfully complete each level.  

    • Fluency will be consistent with the prior pillar along with the ability to make sentence structures relevant and easy to read for others as themselves.  Utilizing the meaning and understanding of the words being written with the correct text will involve vocabulary.  This will follow with the sentence to ensure the meaning of the words make sense to the reader.

  • Phonics use letters in combination with the written language, while using specific sounds in spoken language.  Students are able to use these phonics relationships to read and spell words.  

    • Phonics will involve options of recognizing the difference between sounds.  Students could utilize word sorts between long and short (a) sounds.  The students are given a number of cards that list a word to separate between these two options such as ball as long (a) sound versus apple as a short (a) sound. 

    • Phonics allows students the ability to sound out words while conveying them in writing. "Phonics involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols, whereas phonemic awareness involves sounds in spoken words." (Blevins, 2020)

  • Phonemic awareness involves the student’s ability to understand syllables and words in coordination to each other.  This allows students to focus and interrupt spoken language.

    • Phonemic Awareness could be used during a bingo activity.  This would include objects of pictures, words, or numbers.  The students will be able to look on their paper to signify the items read are on their paper.    

    • Phonemic awareness is utilized to ensure pronunciation of words and proper use of sounds, which will allow writing to flow properly and explain thoughts from the student.  This will help in learning new words and sounding them out as they try to spell the words.

  • Vocabulary is the processing of the meaning of pronunciation of words based on readings or oral communication.  Phonics is a major component for successful vocabulary while vocabulary is important to comprehension.

    • Vocabulary will need to involve choices and defining ability from the student.  A dice rolling game can be helpful as it will mix up the options randomly for the student’s task.  Rolling a dice to decide the task, and they will be in coordination to the task listed on the board.  A few examples will be defining the word, and/or using it in a sentence.  
      
    • Vocabulary will help improve writing and understanding the meaning behind the words being written. "Teachers can help students select reading material with vocabulary that matches their current ability levels so that within a classroom, students are reading text and working on vocabulary at levels that are accessible for each of them." (Parrish, 2020)

  • Comprehension is the detailed skills of the student to understand the details being read and retention thereafter.  Comprehension becomes an everlasting critical skill that affect multiple effects of development in multiple subject areas.  “Together, these skills lead to the ultimate goal of reading: reading comprehension, or understanding what’s been read.” (Lee, 2021)
  • Comprehension will be a correlation of all the above skills with their ability to retain prior learned knowledge.  Utilizing a story cheeseburger as a visual and breakdown option will give students the opportunity to work on each piece while combining all pieces of the story together.  This will detail a picture of a cheeseburger with representation of title, setting, main character, plot, conclusion, and favorite part.  The illustration will show each of these are represented by a cheeseburger and its condiments between the bun.

    • Comprehension is the final piece to ensure all areas flow correctly and make sense so the writer can interrupt the meaning in a way the reader can recite pieces of the writing to others and make an educated explanation of the overall meaning or point.
