I really enjoyed the Top 10 Skills for employers. In my classroom we used to look at 21st century skills that are sought after by employers, but I think this is more valuable because our students really need to learn to invest in themselves and their well-being. Also, I am grateful for the reminder about the journey that students may take to get to our classrooms each and every day. I think it's easy as a teacher to get caught up in being upset about something that has nothing to do with you, because you don't want to lose control, have other students' learning impacted, or have your teaching interrupted. But everyone deserves a break and guidance on how to cope with unmanageable feelings.

We have no idea what is going on with anyone outside of what they share with us and it is important to remember to ask what happened, how can I help versus what is wrong with you!

Toxic stress is something we ought to look more into, not just for the students but for us as staff. Especially this year, but so often in eduction teachers are put into fight or flight mode on the daily between interactions with students, colleagues, parents, and admin, but we are adults and expected to always be fine and always put the kids first, ignoring our own mental and physical health. When we ignore our social-emotional health how are we supposed to then model it to students?

We sometimes don't think about how a child's home life can really cause stress, anxiety, fear, etc. When kids come in with these feelings, we have to stop and think, what happened before they got to school? We need to be patient and TALK to our kiddos that are having a rough time. We have to get to the root of the problem to help them overcome the obstacle at hand. Show them love and hopefully they will show love back!

This was a lot like the conference that some of us attended a couple summers ago. Very important to understand that Childhood Toxic Stress comes from a variety of situations and has lifelong effects. It's important to be aware that we don't know what kids have been through before they walk in our doors each day. "What happened to you?" is easier to de-escalate from than "What's wrong with you?"

I love the empathy that comes from, "What happened to you?" rather than the accusation of, "What's wrong with you?"

I think that empathy needs to be there for kids, especially considering how much of their circumstances are out of their control. However, at some age, kids do need to learn that it is not okay to act out because of what "happened" to you. The world is going to expect you to control your emotions, or they will assume something is "wrong" with you.

It makes me think of all the different layers of opportunities we have to make a 2 second to 20 minute intervention. The bus driver, the office, the classroom . . . all are at risk educators at some level.

I think it's important for everyone to remember that we all have specific reasons that we do things or don't do things. There is a reason a person doesn't do something, it's not just because they didn't want to or they are a bad person. Sometimes people only choose to see the bad side of someone or look at it from a negative point of view without actually knowing what has happened to cause the situation to change or be a last minute change from the norm.

Changes in Mindsets

Just now getting this video watched (had a meeting on Wednesday during PD). That story about Josh is the story of so many students we have at Audubon. We need to shift our mindset from "What's wrong with you?" to What happened to you". Josh's reaction to all that happened (throwing his backpack) was him trying to figure out how to cope. Let's think about if we need to change how we respond to others, especially our students. Let's work together to build our toolboxes.
