It is also established that he has power over Nora and treats her as though she is less than him. We can see this through the way he addresses her with nicknames and the comments he makes about her such as "Nora, Nora just like a woman!". The entirety of act 1 is used for building up the story and getting ready for it to eventually end badly. We learn about Nora's debt and how Krogstad is threatening to blackmail her if he was not to keep his position at the bank.
