Nora forces him to sit down so they can have a serious talk, not a playful one. As the conversation continues, Nora becomes more bold and confident with her words. Nora talks about how she wished her miracle would happen but didn't resulting in her realising that Torvald never loved her. This leads to Nora leaving Torvald and the children.

In the first scene where Torvald and Nora are talking about money it is established that Torvald is the breadwinner of the family which is typical of the 19th century. It is also established that he has power over Nora and treats her as though she is less than him. We can see this through the way he addresses her with nicknames and the comments he makes about her such as "Nora, Nora just like a woman!". The entirety of act 1 is used for building up the story and getting ready for it to eventually end badly. We learn about Nora's debt and how Krogstad is threatening to blackmail her if he was not to keep his position at the bank. By telling us all this in act 1 it creates a lot of dramatic irony within the next acts.

This is one of the major 'breakthroughs' that Nora has, here she is shown telling Torvald to listen to her and her tone in which she speaks is serious. Here she is standing up to Torvald and really starting to go against him. She also is starting to have the realisation about what their relationship really is. Torvald is really taken back and confused by this as in the late 19th century the wife should always listen to the husband and not challenge anything and Torvald truly believes this and he is also very stereotypical and judgemental which explains his initial response and his thinking over time.
