I took her to the window.....I said 'God knows what you've been doing, everything you've been doing. You may fool me, but you can't fool God!(page 159)" In this scene, Wilson is explaining to Michaelis about the time when he had suspicions about Myrtle, so he took her to the window and told her that she is being watched at all times. The eyes act as an observant high figure looking down on all the actions of the people. Everything they do is being watched, either by God or by the daunting eyes of T.J Eckleburg.

In this quote we find out where the eyes are and how they got there, also the way they look. This was said to describe what these eyes are and how they can supposedly haunt you in way because they see your every move. These eyes were used as advertisement but were then left behind, so people took it as someone is always watching them. People do think that these eyes are a god-like figure because the yellow of the spectacles shows some rich higher value and God is a very high value.

In a scene George says, "I told her she might fool me but she couldn't fool God. I took her to the window and I said God knows what you've been doing, everything you've been doing..." (159) With this quote we can infer that the people believe these eyes are watching your every move and that it's God saying "I'm watching you" in a way. The eyes see every time someone lies because it's always watching. Even if they aren't directly in site they still see the lies and deceit people do. It also adds to the theme because in this story people are constantly lying and eventually they all get caught in their lies when they are near the eyes of T.J Eckleburg so it shows that the eyes were always watching and they ended up showing everyone the truth.

No one's dirty and underhanded actions will be unseen, because they are always being watched. Characters such as Myrtle and George Wilson directly align with this symbol. Myrtle cheats on George with Tom, and when she drives off with him she passes the eyes of T.J Eckleburg. Myrtle and George relate to the symbol because after Myrtle's death, George explains to Michaelis about how he told Myrtle that she is always being watched. George admired the eyes of T.J Eckleburg as a god-like figure; therefore, making his wife accountable for all her underhanded and devious actions.
