Because the narrator (Lin) feels that something is wrong

Chinese culture is very “loud”, the episode where the father hits her is a very aggressive (loud) and extreme situation. (Page 66 line 19 - 24) This episode can describe how strict the chinese culture can be. 

“How can you be so fearless! Going out with a white boy!” - an example of how they find it disrespectful to their tradition. She can’t date a non-chinese boy.   

“Talked” is in the past. Maybe the grandmother was her only connection to chinatown. 

Her experience with chinatown is very bad, because it is very loud. 

The chinese can’t date a non-chinese boy.

The family have to take care of/nurse the grandma at home. And we think that the children have to take care of the elderly is a cultural thing. In Denmark it is not a part of our culture, but like in China it is a cultural thing in many countries. 

page 63 line 39: “You’re not the one who has to bathe her and change the sheets…” 

 

1.     How does the narrator feel about her farther?
 They don’t have a good relationship, because he hits her ( page 66, line 19 “My farther walks up to me, his eyes white with anger, and slaps me in the face. Automatically, I slap him back.”) If they had a good relationship with dialog he wouldn’t have hit her. 

 

2.     How does the narrator describe her feelings about Todd?

“She feels good, when he looks at her, my whole body feels like its melting to the ground and I´m always surprised to see that it hasn’t” (page 62 line 11) That means that she likes him, in the way that she describes it as if she was in love. 

 

 

3   & 4 How does the narrator describe her grandmother? Describe the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter?

“I am feel guilty for not spending more time with her, and for not wanting to spend more time with her” (page 64 line 13-14) She describes it like she thinks its boring to spend time with her, but she has to do it, therefor she feels guilt when she doesn’t.

Side 63 line 42 “My mother can’t wait wait for my grandmother do die” Which means that she doesn’t like her.

She wakes up and  her eyelashes is clumped together with dried tears. She feels bad because of her argument with her father, and then she wants to feel comfortable and went down to her grandma. It doesn't stands in the text but we think that is the reason. 

 

Line 17. The mother doesn't like her girl to walk out with a boy who aren´t chinese. 

Line 11-12. The mother doesn't want her daughter to walk out with people who aren´t chinese.

The title: Lin was going to chinatown with her grandmother when she was younger and she remember that everyone talked loud so when she thinks of her grandmother she thinks about chinatown, where they talked loudly. 

Generation/Grandmother: She's the one they all respect and she's the one that the family have to take care of.

Parent´s: They want to raise their daughter in the chinese culture, and they feel like it's their job to do it.

Line 17. 

Lin: She wants to talk with all kinds of cultures and she can't see the problem

1 . Bad relationship. She does not trust her father and is afraid to show her weakness. He does not try to solve the problem or talk it out, he just slaps her in the face (p 66 l.19-24). “ My father walks up to me, his eyes are wide with anger, and he slaps me on the face.. I am left alone for the rest of the night. 

2. He talkes and she listens - onesided ( p 62 l 13 - “Actually Todd talks and i listen” ) it makes her feel good when the other girls look at them together(p 62 l. 11 ).- ...It makes me feel good when they turn  to look at us walk down the hall together. She seems to be in love with him P 62 l 20-24 “(...) His eyes are clear blue, almost like glass, and it’s hard to describe the feeling I get when he looks at me.(...) She likes the idea of him, she likes being wanted, because she isn’t wanted at home. “Falls in love” with him (p 65 l. 42 - “..,Todd takes hold of my hand. I am quickly beginning to fall in love”)

3.(P 63. l. 36-38) She doesn't like feeding her grandmother, and if she could chose she wouldn't - she is just waiting for her to die. 

 page 63 l28 “she almost looks as if she were dead already”

Page 63 l 36-38 - Luckily she has been eating less and less. I have begging my mother to do it instead. 

page 63 l 22-28 - she describes her very cold because to her, the grandmother and her “safe place” is already gone

4.before: they did things together and the grandmother would take care of her (page 64 l. 16-20 - “but now i have to take careof her. It bothers me”)

5. the mother doesn’t like the grandmother because she gave her a hard time “My mother can’t wait for my grandmother to die… she was treated like a slave by Grandmother when she first married my father”(p 63 l 40-45)
