<sup>
</sup>

Things people mentally try to interpret and remember, somehow profound an effect on what they learn and remember (P20). This topic has impact me in different ways because it brings back memories of my childhood. When I first arrived to the United States I did not know how to speak English at all. I enter the 5th grade only knowing three words which where hello, Sorry, Restroom. I was extremely frustrated of the thought of not knowing anything and as time went by I came to learn many new words and phrases. This is where I began to use mnemonics to try to remember a problem in math or a way to study for an English test. There were times that I had to use my hands or draw pictures to try to get people to understand me. Over the years I have come to learn many new things in life, but if it wasn’t for Cognitive processing I don’t think I ever would have moved on. Some of the strategies about encoding words have stayed with me and somehow I was able to pass that down to my sister. Now I look back at what I had to learn and it was all in order to try to be understood by others, to succeed in life.
</sup>

Learners must be selective about what
they focus on and learn:

Effective learners focus on what they think is important and ignore almost everything else (p22). In other words this is exactly how I feel all the time. There major concerns in life, but the three things I value the most is my daughter/ husband, my school work and my health. The reason I mention this three things is because I just became a mom and although it has been challenging it is something I have come to manage pretty well. My focus is in my family, yet I have learned to multitask pretty well to not let my school work behind. There many things that happen in life that one cannot control and in many types that would come first. However, one should not lose focus that the most important thing is to try to achieve one’s goal. As a nursing student I have come to experience many things I did not expect and in way I also have come to learn and focus on what it has been important "my patient" we are all learners in this world nothing comes easy it takes a
lot of work and strength to achieve and go beyond our expectancies.

Learners actively create-rather than
passively absorb-much of what they know and believe about the world:

People use tidbits of information to create a general understanding and interpretation of their world (p22). Perhaps this is one of the areas that I can relate the most because it plays a huge part in my everyday life. My sister and I, we are both nursing major and although she is younger than i am by just a few years we both seem to share some qualities when it comes to studying. However, we also have great difference when it comes to studying. I tend to absorb all the information that has been given to me. I use the method of memorization and read books and PowerPoint’s over and over again. It takes me a long time to study to fully capture the information for my test. On the other hand she is more constructive. She is one of those persons that can put everything together and look at the bigger picture of it all. She pays all the attention in class and only summarizes what’s
difficult and re-reads it at home. Her way of construction has work for her over her high school years and she has improved in college. I’m trying to take the same action since it’s a great way of learning, remembering and obtaining good grades.

Learners use what they already know and
believe to help them make sense of new experience:

I think that this is one of those statements that can relate to many people. The reason I’m saying this is because many of us have pass through something good or bad in life that somehow they have seen happening again, only that this time from experience they have known how to handle it. For example: The first time I told my parents that I had a boyfriend they acted as if the world was coming down on them. They took in such a weird way that made me feel uncomfortable after a few years i explained to them of their attitude and when my sister came to introduce her boyfriend they took it this time more calm, remembering of what I once told them because they did not want to make her feel the way they made me feel. This among other facts makes us realize that we can learn from things that have happen to us previously and in a way tried to make out of it a better experience for us and everyone else.
