“To achieve true progress, the Saudi authorities must uphold their obligations under international human rights law by urgently amending the Personal Status Law and repealing provisions that discriminate against women, including those related to the male guardianship system. They must also ensure that women have equal rights and responsibilities with regards to marriage, divorce, custody and guardianship over their children, and inheritance.”

“The decisions issued in a series of cabinet decrees published by the country's official gazette stipulate that a Saudi passport should be issued to any citizen that applies for it and that any person above the age of 21 does not need permission to travel. The amendments to regulations also grant women for the first time the right to register child birth, marriage or divorce and to be issued official family documents and be eligible as a guardian to children who are minors.”

“The Law of Saudi Arabia, derived from Islamic Law, adopts the principle of complementary equality between men and women, considering both sexes' characteristics, to achieve ultimate justice. Saudi Arabia believes that the integration of the relationship between the sexes is an ideal way to promote and protect human rights and to guarantee equality between men and women, such as the rights to work, education, health, economic rights and others. Based on the perspective of equality and emphasizing it, the Human Rights Commission has allowed both women and men.”

“Sustainable development requires observing the principles of dignity and equality among people. The prerequisites for a sustainable egalitarian society include combating poverty, providing universal health care, food, good education, and gender equality. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has emphasized women's role in development by improving and activating their capacities at the local and international levels as an important element of society. The Saudi government has designated a strategic goal in Vision 2030 to increase women's participation in the labor market and ensure their rights in healthcare and education in line with the fifth goal of sustainable development.”

“On a recent visit to Saudi Arabia, women made up a large percentage of the workforce as border agents, tour guides, in hospitality and fields that would have seemed unimaginable a few years ago.”

“Over the past year, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation of female participation in the Saudi Arabian workforce. Saudi women can now start their own businesses without the consent of a husband or male relative, which was previously required under the country’s guardianship system. The eased aspects of the guardianship system also grant women independent access to government services, jobs, education and health care without the need for prior consent.”
