During the Trust vs Mistrust stage, the infant is questionable about the world around them. Because they do not know what is going on, the infant seeks stability from their primary caregiver. If the infant acquires good, consistent, dependable care then they will have a sense of trust and feel safe around the caregiver. If the caregiver is unreliable and inconsistent, or even harsh, then the infant will not trust the caregiver and will therefore be unconfident in their abilities which will be apparent in other relationships. Mistrust can result in anxiety, and insecurity. However, if the infant is in a trustworthy relationship with the caregiver, they acquire the virtue of hope. Hope creates a sense of safety even if the infant feels threatened which can be carried to other relationships.
