To add something new, I also think that part of this has to be regularly checking and contributing to the online community. I find it easy to wait too long and fall out of touch.

Students, similarly, need to be dependable. If this is a true distance situation, my only interaction will be online, and students suddenly disappearing would be bad. If a critical mass of students acted that way, it could harm the learning environment.
