Old-fashioned Technology

In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury references many old-fashioned technological items that are hardly used in today’s society. For example, the people in the book use radios and portable televisions. Nowadays, such items are either used when in a further progressed state or not used at all. Such as, a car has a radio built into it, whereas in the 1950s they had to be powered by batteries. Many other, more recent technologies were used in the book, such as a flamethrower. In the 50s, flamethrowers were a highly experimental piece of technology. Flamethrowers in the book are used very differently than in real life. In Fahrenheit 451, the firemen use them to burn books and other contraband in that society. In real life, they are used by military forces in warzones to burn down enemy camps and other structures. Characters in the book also mentioned a printing press to make copies of books. “This afternoon I thought that if it turned out books were worthwhile, we might get a press and print some extra copies-” (Bradbury 81). Printing presses are almost never used in real society. They are usually used as a decoration.

Changes in Recent Tech

Technology in Fahrenheit 451 is used in different ways or for different purposes. Such as, how they use many of their technologies. In the book they use many things differently, for example, they use flamethrowers to burn books instead of enemy military camps. “Not with kerosene and a match, but piecework with a flamethrower.” (Bradbury 109). They use jets to patrol the city rather than scout out other places. They have robots keeping watch instead of in the workforce. Using these things differently has caused a major shift between the societies. Making the society Montag lives in have a dystopian feel. This makes the story seem symbolically mysterious and strange. When Montag found the people on the railroad, he became a different person, since all of them were also thought to be dead in the society. Many of the people in the society kept themselves in touch with the other society by watching the portable TV and reading. “Granger nodded to a portable battery TV set by the fire” (Bradbury 125). This kept them aware of when people were coming from out of the town so they could stay hidden. While hidden they couldn’t be executed for real.

Similar Technologies

Many technologies from Fahrenheit 451 are used or not used similar to the way we use them in real life. For example they don’t use a railroad much in their society. “The railroad track” (Bradbury 134). In real life, we use railroads to travel short distances or to transport goods nearby. Planes are used nowadays to transport both people and goods long distances. “The bombers crossed the sky and crossed the sky over the house…” (Bradbury 69). In today’s society, we use X-rays to look at bones and other organs inside the body. They used an X-ray in Fahrenheit 451 to look into the stomach of a woman. “In the other walls an X-ray of the same woman revealed the contracting journey of the refreshing beverage on its way to her delighted stomach” (Bradbury 96). Also the book mentions a vacuum cleaner, which we use in our society. “...the vacuum hissed out at him.” (Bradbury 132).
