Having each student share their favourite word and then discuss the meaning, why they enjoy it and how they say it (pronunciation, how you say it, the emotion behind the word) 

Adding words for different seasons, celebrations, discussions that are important to the class. 

Incorporating a section of "bad" words and why we shouldn't be using them in our conversations. Not including swear words or words that they should not be using, but rather words that could be discriminatory or used to hurt others and teaching them why we shouldn't be using them rather than just telling them not to. 

Having a "polite" word section where students learn better ways in which to talk to others. This could promote better communication with others as they are promoting kinder speak. 

Section on words that are hard to spell or a different spelling (i.e. silent K in the word knight). This will help the students remember that spelling or pronunciation and they will have a visual to go back to when they may forget or struggle.

This is a good way to incorporate multiple curriculum areas into one activity. We think students will enjoy this activity because they can make the activity into a game to see who rhythm can the most words together without losing their rhythm. We would like to use this in a grade 2-3 classroom.

1. Story circles: Allow children to sit in small groups and share personal stories to encourage communication and peer support. 

2. Add humour to the classroom: Start the morning with a "joke of the day". Give each child a chance to share their joke. 

3. Use the talking stick (or maybe the talking beanbag, so the talking stick doesn't become the whack'em stick) to provide children with a chance to have an opportunity to talk, with the class focusing on them.
