The remains, consisting of only a jawbone fragment with three teeth attached, were found in the Catacombs of Saints Marcellinus and Peter, south-east Rome. They were uncovered in a chamber during a rescue excavation, conducted before a support pillar could be installed.

They are recognisable for their huge, tall columns; their flat or domed roofs; and their gardens that, like the Neoclassical buildings they surround, conform to rules of symmetry, and follow patterns. 

The muons are then captured by the atoms within the coins, which then emit a ‘fingerprint’ of muonic X-rays that are unique to the chemical element they came from.

Local media reports said people have looted many artefacts from the site.

Published in the journal Antiquity, the researchers from the department of archeology and ancient history at Lund University in Sweden used spatial analysis and eye tracking to monitor volunteers as they explored a virtual reconstruction of the House of the Greek Epigrams, a home in northeast Pompeii that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
