Caroline Chisholm was born in Northampton, England, on the 30thof May, 1808. She was born as the daughter of William jones, a farmer. She had six siblings. She was home-schooled and became a catholic at 19. She got married when she was 22 and then had six children. When she moved to Australia it became her mission to support women and ended up helping over a thousand people. The fact that she was happily married and educated made her want to help other women who had not been educated and relied on prostitution to have a future. She died in 1877.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and

saw him, passed by on the other side.33 But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

World behind the text
It is important to understand the relationship between jews and samaritans, the road of which the man was travelling and the difference as a role as the priest or levite in the time. The road that stretched from Jerusalem to Jericho was in between two mountains and was know as the way of blood. This is because the road was considered very dangerous because many people had been robbed and killed on this road. The priest and levite may have not helped the man because they were scared of being hurt themselves or because he was injured and if they were dirty or unclean they would not be accepted into the temple. It is also important to understand that the jews and samaritans were hostile to each other. This adds extra meaning as no one would think a samaritan would help a jew.

World of the text
The purpose of this parable is to answer the question 'who is my neighbour?' This scripture is identified as a parable because of the characteristics of the text and inclusion of various elements. parables have a narrative structure and are written in past tense. A narrative has a clear structure, orientation, complication and resolution. This scripture strictly follows this structure. The orientation is when the question 'who is my neighbour?' is asked by the expert in the law and Jesus starts to set the scene with the location, 'a road from Jerusalem to Jericho.' the complication is when the travelling man is injured and no one helps him. The resolution is when the samaritan takes care of him and Jesus answers the question.

World in front of the text

I think that the parable, ‘the good Samaritan’, would have inspired Caroline because it is all about how a stranger helped his neighbour get back on his feet, provided and cared for and him. This is exactly what Caroline did. She waited on the wharf for new women to arrive and would help them start their life in Australia. She welcomed strangers into her home when they were not supported.

Caroline Chisholm followed many spiritual practices and prayers which influenced her life’s work. In particular, she was inspired by the spiritual practices of worshipping god, following Jesus, participating in the sacrament of penance, and praying daily. She was inspired by the commandment ‘love thy neighbour’, which is reflected in her work of helping immigrants. This commandment is also shown in the parable ‘The Good Samaritan’ many believe this particular parable inspired Caroline to devote her life to helping others.

Caroline Chisholms writings give us insight to the inspiration behind her charity and give us details about her life work.
In London 1842, she wrote about her call to help others:

I was impressed with the idea that God had, in a peculiar manner, fitted me for this work; and yet I hesitated . . . my delay pressed on my mind as a sin; and when I heard of a poor girl suffering distress and losing her reputation in consequence, I felt that I was not clear of her sin, for I did not do all I could to prevent it.

During the season of Lent that year, I suffered much; but on Easter Sunday I was enabled, at the altar of our Lord to make an offering of my talents to the God who gave them. . . .

. . . I felt my offering was accepted and God’s blessing was on my work
- Caroline Chisholm, Female Immigration Considered in a Brief Account of the Sydney Immigrants Home
There are many newspapers, plays, poems and many other forms of writing that are contributed to dictate the life of Caroline Chisholm.
Her impact was spiritual and emotional as Herminie Chavanne in 1852 wrote after her meeting with Caroline Chisholm:

Kindness shone from her face, with never a hint of weariness and it was obvious that God had granted her all the courage and energy she needed for this living work for her ‘neighbour’.

This quote shows a strong connection between Chavanne’s observations and the commandment ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ which inspired Caroline Chisholm.

Caroline aimed to implement principles of justice in our society and improve human dignity. Her attitudes, values and beliefs were influenced by her strong Christian faith that everyone has a right for justice. Carolines concern for social justice were not yet considered by the church. However, 14 years after her death, in 1891, an encyclical addressing the issues she had fought for in her lifetime had been released. Rerum Novarum (meaning revolutionary change), was issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 and marks the start of the development of human rights and marks the start of what we call the catholic social teachings.

It is clear that Caroline demonstrated the priestly, prophetic and kingly roles of Jesus during her life's work. She displayed the priestly side of her work as she lived out daily catholic practices and lived in the image of Jesus. She showed prophetic roles of Jesus as she worked within the church communicating the injustice in society. As she gained respect in society she became a voice for the people and brought about change for female immigrants. she wrote letters and met with the new South Wales governor to cause change in society.
