I will say is risk management and flood mitigation. Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, one of the six strategic thrusts is "Pursuing green grow for sustainability and resilience" where one of the focus area is strengthening resilience against climate change and natural disaster. Under this focus area, two of the associated strategies is related to water issue are strengthening disaster risk management and improving flood mitigation.

(3) I would like to gain the knowledge on the risk involve in water engineering and actions to be taken to solve the risk involve in water engineering issue.

Have a nice day and see you ^^.

Cheers,
GT Leong

In order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6), the Malaysia government recognizes the need to harvest water using alternative methods. In this forum, I wish to exchange ideas and knowledge on methods for sustainable water resources.

(2) Malaysian water demands are anticipated to escalate as the country continues to develop. This indicates a need to water supply system development with capacity of about 10,000 MLD from 2010 to 2030. Considering the present stress on water resources quantity and quality in major cities, this has become one of the key issues for development in Malaysia. A sustainable solution to water resources development is critical in order to support the increasing water demand.

(3) I am interested with the topic regarding to evolution of water resources development, internationally.

Hope to see you guys soon! So, before build the landfill need to be consider about the place. If the place is flood area it will disturb the landfill. Besides that, most of the landfill in malaysia did not constructed to avoid the rainwater. That can cause overflow and the detention pond cannot support the leachate. This will affect the quality of water if the leachate enter the river.

2)based on my opinion, flood is the most difficult problem to be solve.it because every year it become worse.

3)i want something that we can do for reduce the flood. In history, there have also been many large-scale floods, causing serious loss of life and property. For example, on July 1, 2017, the water level in the mainstream of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River continued to rise, causing millions of people to be transferred urgently, bringing huge economic losses. How to identify the risk of floods more accurately and carry out more accurate flood warnings is very meaningful for reducing flood disasters.

I hope that in this forum, I could learn more about how to manage flood risks and predict flood disasters, how to better identify and manage flood risks.

Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Cheers,
Zifu Zhang

Hi everyone. I am Eugene, PhD student of Department of Civil Engineering, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.

First and foremost, I am glad to have this opportunity to participate in this workshop. This workshop has a close connection with my research. Currently, I am developing hydrological models specifically for extreme flood events by utilizing various near real-time satellite precipitation products for Peninsular Malaysia. Flood is one of the most important water issue that happen in our country. It can be particularly disruptive, leading to widespread collapse of infrastructure. Malaysia, being hot and humid all year round, with an average rainfall around 2500 mm annually, is susceptible to extreme flooding events especially in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. In the recent years, flooding events has been increasing in terms of frequency and impact. For example, the 2014 flood in Malaysia has been described as the worst flood in decades. The damages caused by this flood has affected badly on the people causing them a great devastation, especially when it comes to the loss of homes and other infrastructures. Although a lot of research has been carried out to address these issues, there is still lack of understandings on the driving parameters that contributes to the more frequent flooding events. Hopefully, in this workshop, I could gain new knowledge as well as new friends. Also, it will be glad if I could find any collaboration for any research of the same field/interest.

Looking forward to meet all of you there.

Cheers,

Eugene

Hi, greetings to all of you. First of all I would like to welcome our honorable guests from Tsinghua University, China. Well for myself, my name is Soung Ying or you can address me as Dumdum. I am a current 2nd year undergraduate student pursuing Civil Engineering at USM KKJ.
1)The reason why I joined this forum was a coincidence. Initially I would like to join as a helper but then Dr Goh accidentally invited me as the participant. I am very thankful that I was given a chance to join the discussion team as we are going to seek for a better solution countering the impacts of flood. I would expect creative and innovative ideas to be brought out so that WE the future leaders are making ourselves forward to a sustainable environment.
2) Every year our beloved country Malaysia has to be struck by massive flood. These floods had caused the economical lost and our citizens are suffering, innocent lifes are losing to the power of nature while we the engineers have the ability to stop or at least mitigate the situation. As a penangite, our lovely homeland Penang had encountered one of the most terrible flood in the history. Hence, I hope to seek for a solution to counter the flood else than just upgrading the drainage system. Wetlands are definitely one of the greener choice that we can look into it.
3) Well at least at the end of the workshop I could know much on the problems and suggested mitigation of flood. For the most important thing is we do build up the interaction among us which then brings us to a higher stage and excel our ideas as the most effective way to treat the flood. Looking forward to meet all of you soon and let's make some friends here! =D

Cheers,
Au Soung Ying

*By the way I am still single, if any one of you are interested to be friend with me, my contact number is 012-4554051 XD

I hope to benefit from this forum through exchanging experience, opinion and knowledge among participant.
(2) Malaysia is bless with the abundance of mangrove forest along the west-coast of peninsular Malaysia, however the mangrove growth was threaten by many environmental & human activities that lead to the mangrove loss (i.e . sea level rise, shrimp farming & etc). The interaction of seawater flows with the mangrove growth at the seedling stage plays a vital role to the mangrove growth and development. Currently, I am pursuing my PhD here in Hydroinformatic, a research field that uses application of computer technology in addressing water issues.

(1) My research focus is the application of flood risk assessment with hydrodynamic modeling in flood management focusing merely at urban areas. Risk assessment is a non-structural flood management approach providing pre-management tools for which the flood disaster preparedness can be referred to all measures to prepare before the event. Hence, the discussion of water management in this program from experts and youths would be my golden opportunity to gain new knowledge of current global water-related issues and solutions.

(2) Serious flood event such as the one experienced in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia in December 2014 and more recently in Penang, November 2017, highlighted the serious hazard posed by flooding in this country. These large-scale flood events severely impacted peoples, infrastructures, houses including loss of human life. Therefore, effective solutions to minimize the flood impact is critical for the future of this country.

(3) I am interested to hear the view from Prof. Shahbaz Khan as an expert and experienced figure on this topic and his view on the role of youth in contributing solution to a global issue. I am also looking forward to listening and discuss among the experts and youths about the causes and solutions for the water issue.

Thank you,

Muhammad Kashfy
