I learned that when not giving a grade, it is important to give very descriptive feedback.

Is there research on a fully gradeless school and its effects on students? Both positive and negative?

I think it could be a good idea, especially in art. I like to give my students feedback throughout and feedback after they are done, and I take a lot of time to do that but it seems like all that matters is the number to the students. Art is tough to mark already, and the focus should be on continuously improving and not on if they are doing objectively "good" or not

I don't believe that I would go gradeless because I know that there are many students who only partake in assessment when it's "worth marks."

The main question that I still have is as follows, "How does one motivate a student who is "trained" to respond solely to extrinsic motivators when doing work?"

One thing that I learnt is that learning stops when a numerical grade is assigned and that actionable feedback counters this halt in progress.
