Explore how to make learning stick and foster long-term memory retention by immersing your students in Chinese culture and language through authentic texts, including music, games, arts, foods, field trips, stories, and celebrations.

Learning Targets: Teachers will

• identify captivating examples to captivate learner curiosity and motivation.

• explore cognitively demanding cultural tasks to keep learners engaged.

• define "purposeful practice" in
  TL teaching and apply it to enrich learner-centered cultural awareness with real-life experiences.

Description: Can you get students interested in reading (in a second language) AND build classroom community at the same time? Yes! During this workshop, learn how to create compelling and comprehensible texts along with students. A variety of strategies will be introduced, explain and demonstrated, ensuring that attendees have something to implement in their classrooms on Monday morning with their students.

Everyone is welcome, whether you speak Arabic or not, for this discussion of how we distinguish (or not) between different dialects and registers within a single named language like Arabic.

Description: I am a believer in using Comprehensible Input for teaching languages in the classroom, but as an introvert, I find it difficult to sustain many of the activities associated with CI teaching on a daily basis. Come learn to rethink strategies to engage students using Comprehensible Input that are a bit less energy-exhaustive on yourself as the teacher. Whether you are an introvert yourself, are simply looking for activities to mix up your current CI teaching, or are looking for activities for those days when you "just can't," this session is for you. Bring a device to fully engage in the session.
