Reasons why we should use GMO foods!

- Since GMO foods cannot be grown out in regular fields with other plants, growing them inside helps us out. We are slowly running out of land to use for farming and the other land we have is starting to erode by having crops. This is a small step into the erosion problem but growing them inside would benefit us in the long run.

- Biotechnology can actually make our food more nutritious! Not only can our food grow faster and even larger, but it can also give us more health benefits! One of the biggest examples of this is the Golden Rice project. The golden rice project was a GMO version of rice that gave us more beta-carotene and this helped with the major problem of vitamin A deficiency.

- If you are still not sure you want to try it out, just know that all of the GMO foods are checked for allergies and safety issues! Testing takes forever, however, but! they are making sure and taking no chances once it comes to checking the food. They want the customers to be satisfied with the food and this can take years for it to be fully checked.

- One of the biggest issues in using GMO foods is that we harm the local farm business. most of the people who can produce GMO foods come from larger companies or just scientists who tend to have more money than these farmers. By using GMO foods, we are actively harming the farming business. Eventually, if we rely on GMO foods and that fails, by that time we wouldn't have any more regular farmers to produce our food anymore.

- They ruin natural bio-diversity. Since most of these certain foods have to be isolated from themselves so they don't harm regular crops, they harm biodiversity with these crops. At this rate, we will continue to only grow these certain crops that have been modified and we would lose all of the other natural types of crops from this way.

- Lastly, they have an environmental risk to growing these crops. If any of them happen to mingle with the regular crops this could cause big issues. Most of these GMO foods have their genetic makeup to make it so they resist weeds but regular crops do not have this. If they end up traveling to other fields, the original crops would be in big trouble. GMO foods would just overrule the natural crops if they were ever to meet.

I strongly believe that GMO foods should be labeled compared to regular crops. Just like how organic foods are labeled, GMO foods should be as well. I understand that doing this will cause a bigger debate if we should trust GMOs and it would also lower profit for these companies. However, some of this stuff can be allergic to some people and people who purchase these foods should know if they are GMO or not.

Rice in this case was modified to become golden rice. Scientists modified the regular rice grain with a gene from soil and maize to give it its color. Besides the golden rice having the color, it actually helps us and we benefit from having that extra gene. One of the biggest problem in kids is the lack of vitamin A growing up and this is a big issue. However, golden rice was created so we could stop this problem showing up in children. Another thing scientists made it do was last harsher environments. The golden rice plant itself can last longer outside and it takes a lot more pressure to destroy the plant.

Salmon is genetically modified to become bigger for our use and for it to grow faster. Scientists in Canada took the growth hormone of a ocean pout and placed it in the new salmon. This did not harm the salmon at all and caused the fish to grow double in size in less of the time. The salmon will grow to be in full size in only 18 months. They brought this program in the states and now they grow in Indiana.

- We have increased our herbicide use when using GMOs to keep them up. Sales of herbicides have gone up by 199%.

- Insects now are immune to the stuff we place in these crops and now will eat them.

- The two biggest ones however are contamination issues and the loss of biodiversity. These two tie together because the GMO plants cannot be with other plants because they will eventually just overrule them. By this, we are losing the chances of biodiversity in these crops and if this ever happened, this would be a contamination issue.

They actually help butterflies and bees mostly! The crops themselves do not actually harm these organisms. The good thing is that because these crops are genetically modified, they use chemicals less. This is good for the organisms consuming them. The only bad thing in this case is that bugs are becoming more resistant to it and end up destroying the plants which we really can't do anything about because this is natural.

After all the research that has been done and all of the proof shown, they are good for us! There has been no proof in showing that GMO foods have harmed us and actually they have helped us. Putting more on our plates and them growing faster is very good for us. However, the only downside from this is the lack of biodiversity as we do this. Hopefully, this issue can be solved in the future but, there is no proof in saying GMOs are bad for us! Continue to support GMOs! (also local farmers too)
