Throughout this semester I would like to improve my reading skills. He is a good one to analyze because of the way he describes everything in the third person. Everything he describes and says is very clear, and gives you a good idea what's going on throughout the novel. We have seen Omar transform from a kid to an adult. One thing that stands out is Omar describes his life with Dora and describes her lips and everything with so much detail you could picture it. Omar is the kind of character that is full of energy and always on the move. After going through everything as a child and realized as he grew up that someone the stuff his grandma would say to him was not okay. Felipe bounces back and fourth from living in California and New York. In New York living with his mom in what he calls the "Broken House", felipe is looking for trouble, he starts trouble and is not in a good mental state there in New York. In New York he is in gangs and fighting, this made him aggressive and in the novel he starts doing very bad stuff. He then moves to California where he soon realizes there is another life here away from gangs and violence. When we think things are getting better he goes back to his life in New York with gang banging. We seen Omar struggle with his family as well as drinking and with girls, and we have seen Felipe struggle with gang violence and poor decisions. After seeing all of the struggles from each character I would say the theme is "the past doesn't define you". Each character has the capability of changing themselves around because like Felipe and Omar, you can't judge them on their poor decisions because they are capable of changing. Omar and Felipe also struggled at a young age with their families which does not help with how you live your life in the future especially back then. With that said the theme of this story so far to me is there's a lot of hope and a lot of time to turn yourself around. A lot of rappers and music artists express a lot of emotions when rapping and typically it's about how they live their life and what they have been through. It's crazy how much you can learn and pick up from just listening to lyrics or really put some thought into what someone is singing or just saying. Kendrick Lamar talks about his childhood and how it was tough growing up. He also mentioned his mistakes growing up joining a gang and how his childhood really wasn't that tough his poor decisions were. A theme I pulled from this album is someone's only as good as the people they surround themselves with. The strong women that are known and make a name for themselves in the rap game, that is typically dominated by males as this society makes it because these women aren't getting enough credit. Women talk about their rough childhoods or what they have been through and i think it is an eye opener for everyone because males aren't the only ones going through a bad childhood or having events in their lives that impacted them. With watching a lot of sports I see discrimination in not just rap but also in sports. For instance you can watch multiple games and can see a bunch of millionaire men in the NBA on tv, but its hard to fine a WNBA game with women that make maybe at most a couple hundred thousand a year or maybe over a couple years. This song is really deep because it is about a female prostitute and how she was sexually abused. This is very rare because you don't really see to often male rappers bringing up female problems. It's usually female speakers that are addressing the conflicts. He addresses a few good points about how the community does a bad job at addressing things that go on to women and how their voices should be heard more. There aren't many women in the music industry and men typically dominate this and you see it in sports as well, when women are easily doing the same jobs men are and get paid a lot less. In sports women get treated not nearly as well as the men do and not to mention the pay they get is far less than men.
