Australia is a unique place for investment
in liquor wholesaling and bars, pubs and taverns because there is very little
regulation in relation to the advertisement of its central product – Alcohol.

Advertisements that are aimed at reducing
the consumption of alcohol often have a pro drinking message. Here is an
example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh-L8EJAgvk

The American study “Are ‘drink responsibly’
alcohol campaigns strategically ambiguous?” has indicated that alcohol
providers and suppliers have achieved advantageous outcomes to a large extent
with these drink responsibly campaigns and the interpretations tended to be
mostly pro drinking.

On a closer analysis, the AFL drink
responsibly does exactly this. It serves to subtly advance both industry sales
and public relations interests as the underlying message promotes the
consumption of alcohol. The inferences that can be drawn are:

1.
Alcohol shouldn’t be consumed
in excess; and

2.
Alcohol can be consumed in
connection with prestigious events such as the brownlow;

It basically says you can consume alcohol
but don’t consume in excess.

As children from a young age are exposed to
these types of advertisements, they would learn about drinking alcohol and what
society says about it. They would then accept and act on these understandings
which society has provided them.
(MacAndrew and Edgerton, Drunken Comportment)

Nowhere in this campaign does it implicate
against consumption. It merely says drink responsibly. This has enabled
Australia to be a society where the consumption of alcohol is seen as a
normalized process and is often encouraged. In Australia, consumption of
alcohol is often seen as a compliment to activities. Examples being
celebrations, social engagements and events.

The effect of this normalizing process is that
most people forget that alcohol is a drug. It would seem these characteristics
make Australia unique because even the anti alcohol campaigns have a
pro-consumption message.

Edgerton R 1970, 'A Drunken Comportment: A Social Explanation'

Smith SW, Atkin CK, Roznowski J 2006, 'Are "drink responsibly" alcohol campaigns strategically ambiguous?', Health Communication, vol. 20 issue 1.

Intro and structure

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman. Today my colleagues,
Kate, Ben, Allan and myself have a great investment opportunity for you.
When people think about investment in
Australia, you typically think of industries such as mining or ore. However, we
have two very different industries to present to you that are thriving in
Australia, they are, liquor wholesaling and pubs, taverns and bars.

A liquor wholesaler is a company that purchases alcoholic
products such as beer, wines and spirits in high quantities, and sells these
products to retailers such as pubs, bars, taverns and super markets. (Grocery, liquor and tobacco product
wholesaling, 2015) Alcohol operates within the FCMG (fast moving
consumer goods) – liquor industry. This means that from a producer’s point of
view, these alcoholic products are typically sold in large volumes to retailers
with a low contribution margin through extensive distribution networks with a
high, fast moving stock turnover rate. (What is FMCG?, 2015) A market
research report produced in February 2015 by Ibisworld showed that the
Australian liquor wholesaling industry has revenue of over $5 billion, as well
as employing nearly 6000 people across over 2000 businesses. (Liquor
Wholesaling in Australia Market Research, 2015)

 Liquor wholesaling
also feeds into the industry of bars, taverns and pubs. The main product of
these bars, taverns and pubs are alcoholic beverages. These retailers purchase
alcoholic products from liquor wholesalers and then on-sell these products to
the public. Market research conducted by Ibisworld in may 2015 shows that pubs,
bars and taverns in Australia generate revenue exceeding $17 billion, employing
nearly 86,000 people across 3 and a half thousand business. These figures, as
well as a 2.1% growth in the last 5 years (Pubs, Bars and Nightclubs in Australia Market Research,
2015) highlight the strength of the industry in Australia.

Benefits and Conclusion

Investing in liquor wholesaling bars, pubs and taverns in Australia has many benefits.
Starting off with what Ben mentioned earlier, Advertisement regulation is very light for this industry. Australia is a society that doesn’t view alcohol in a negative manner as long as consumption is within controlled standards. Campaigns about alcohol focus on responsibility, not elimination.

The volume of pure alcohol available for consumption in the form of beer increased by 1.0% and wine by 0.2% between 2012-13 and 2013-14, thought these percentages
are low, they are constantly growing marginally which is evident of industry growth (ABS Government 2015).

As Marcus previously mentioned, alcohol falls under FMCG, fast moving consumer goods. This is beneficial because it is a fast-paced constantly forward-moving industry. Alcohol is also a product that is always in demand within the
Australian society being a $5 billion dollar industry.

Observing financial results of Horizon Wine & Spirits over a 5-year period, a large wholesale distributor of alcohol, the company saw:

· 39% compound
annual growth in EBITDA (which essentially is net income including expenses)

· 35% compound
annual sales growth

· 36% compound
annual store growth (Fink 2010)

In
conclusion;

Liquor
wholesaling,

Bars,
pubs and taverns,

are both durable and upward industries within Australia. They both associate with
one another. You cannot have one without the other. On behalf of my colleagues and I, thank-you for your undivided attention today and feel free to ask any questions.
REFERENCES

Liquor wholesaling provides a service involving purchasing and suppling liquor
products for businesses that is then distributed to consumers. These products are originally bought from manufactures allowing wholesalers to then sell the items to pubs, bars, supermarkets, taverns and other liquor retailers
(IBISWorld 2015).

Businesses such as pubs, taverns and bars provide a service to customer where alcoholic
beverages can be purchased and consumed on the premises. These companies all share the same main objective, which is to operate licensed venues. However, there is a difference between these three places. A bar is where alcohol is
bought and served on the premises. A variety of liquors such as beer, wine, mixed drinks and cocktails can be purchased within. Generally, a bar will provide some sort of entertainment for example a live band or juke boxes. People
under the required drinking age will not be allowed into a bar (InnovateUs 2013).

A tavern is not only a place where alcoholic beverages can be purchased as food
is also sold there. This allows a tavern to act as a restaurant, resulting in customers below the drinking age to be allowed into the area. There are only a small variety of drinks that can be purchased from a tavern including beer, wine and spirits (InnovateUs 2013).

A pub is very similar to a tavern. The main reason consumers will travel to a pub is to drink. However, some pubs also offer food. The main drink sold in a pub is beer but cider, wines, spirits and soft drinks can also be purchased. Depending
on whether a pub sells food or not the people allowed in the premises will change. If food is sold then consumers under the drinking age are allowed in. If no food is sold then customers under the required drinking age will not be allowed in the premises (Difference Between 2012).
