Vladimir Lenin was the founder of the Russian Communist party, leader of the Bolshevik Revolution and architect and first head of the Soviet State. Lenin was born on April 22, 1870 in Ulyanovsk, Russia. His idea's of Bolshevism were founded on those of Karl Marx. Lenin was a prominent leader and thinker. I consider Lenin a main character because he was the leader and head of communism and bolshevism in the Soviet Union.

Karl Marx

Karl Marx was born on May 5, 1818 in Trier Germany. Marx was a philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. In 1848 Marx published a book called "Communist Manifesto" which was based on his beliefs of Marxism and Communism. Marx died in London on March 14, 1883. Vladimir Lenin was fascinated by Marx's ideas and started the Bolshevik party because of Marx. I consider Marx a major character because he was the core of communism and the flame that ignited the Russian Revolution.

Joseph Stalin

Joseph Stalin was born on December 18, 1879 in Gori, Georgia. Stalin became interested in Bolshevism as a teenager. He was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party during Lenin's reign. After Lenin's death Stalin took over as a communist dictator. He got rid of all of Lenin's close followers. He was a main factor in WW2. I consider Stalin a main character because he was one of the main Communist leaders and a close follower of Lenin.

Leon Trotsky

Leon Trotsky was born on November 7, 1879 in Yanovka, Ukraine. Trotsky helped Lenin wage Russia's 1917 revolution. As commissar of war in the new Soviet government, he helped defeat forces opposed to Bolshevik control. Trotsky was the leader of the first Red Army in the Russian Revolution. As the Soviet government developed, he engaged in a power struggle with Joseph Stalin, which he lost, leading to his exile and eventually his murder. I consider Trotsky a main character because he was one of Lenin's main guys and he was the leader of the Red Army in the Russian Revolution.

February Revolution

Began on March 8, 1917 in St. Petersburg. The revoultion remained in the vicinity of the capital, and lasted less than a week. This revolution involved mass demonstrations and battles with police and gendarmes. As this revolution came to an end, Russian Army forces sided with the revolutionaries. The result of the revolution was the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II, the end of the Romanov dynasty, and the end of the Russian Empire.

Tsar Nicholas II

Nicholas II was born on May 18, 1868 in Pushkin, Russia. He inherited the throne when his father Alexander III died in 1894. Nicholas II was forced to step down from his throne as the Bolsheviks began to take over Russia. On July 17, 1918, Nicholas II and his family were murdered by a group of Bolsheviks. I consider Nicholas II a main character because he was part of the reason the Russian Revolution began and he was the last Tsar of Russia before the Bolsheviks overthrew him.

October Revolution

On October 24, 1917, units of Red guards took control of Petrograd. Key buildings, power stations, railway and tram stations, and important bridges were in Bolshevik hands. A large ship that was sympathetic to the Bolsheviks, the "Aurora," steamed up the river Neva and trained its guns on the Winter Palace, where the Provisional Government was located. On the night of October 25th/26th, the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace and arrested Provisional Government.

Kornilov Revolt

The Kornilov revolt was a chaotic time in August 1917, during which the Russian Provisional Government was under threat from its own army. The commander in chief of the Russian army, Lavr Kerensky planned to overthrow the head of the army, Alexander Kerensky. Once Kerensky heard of Kornilov's plans he sacked him and called on the Petrograd Soviet to protect the government, should Kornilov proceed to move against the city. The Soviet was able to short-circuit any chance of an attack by informing delegates and organisers in military units under Kornilov’s command. Meanwhile, in Petrograd, Soviet troops were given arms and ammunition to guard the city limits from a possible assault. Kornilov's coup d'etat failed and he was removed from Commander in Chief.

The End of the Russian Government

November 1917 was a very important month in the Russian Revolution because it was the month in which Russia enforced the world's first communist government. Lenin took over the vital city of St Petrograd and removed the Provisional Government from power, enforcing a communistic one.

July Days 1917

Following the failure of the

offensive in June, the Bolsheviks

made an attempt to seize power

in Petrograd in July. Here, Lenin

made a serious misjudgement

which could have led to disaster

for the Bolsheviks. Only small

numbers of soldiers and sailors

actively supported the Bolsheviks

and the uprising was suppressed

by loyal troops. A number of

Bolshevik leaders were arrested

and Lenin fled to Finland.

II abdicated his throne. His brother

Mikhail refused to accept the throne.

The provisional government is formed.
