Tornadoes, which used to be rare on the Croatian coast, are now appearing more often – a clear sign of climate change. These extreme weather conditions pose risks to people, nature, and infrastructure. Climate change is intensifying storms and highlights the urgent need for environmental action.

Link to the article: https://www.index.hr/vijesti/clanak/foto-veliko-nevrijeme-na-podrucju-velebita-pijavice-lomile-stabla/992105.aspx

The team from Secondary School Otočac, Croatia

Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire
The two major wildfires were fueled by hurricane-force winds that brought dry air from the deserts inland.
Dry, dangerous Santa Ana winds gusted to 30 to 50 mph. Average temperatures in California are rising.
Santa Ana winds are a natural meteorological phenomenon, but some models show that their frequency and timing could change due to climate change.
Climate change doesn't create the winds, but it does increase the risk that these winds will cause larger, faster, and more difficult-to-control fires

Floods in Italy’s northeast sent rivers of mud through towns, showing the extreme weather linked to climate change. In the Emilia-Romagna region, trapped between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, heavy rains dumped half a year’s rainfall in just a week, killing 13 people. Years of drought had already dried out the land, making it unable to absorb water, so rain quickly washed away. Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said Italy must adapt to more frequent weather extremes and improve its flood protections. Similar dry-to-flood swings are happening worldwide.

We talked about this event at school to understand how climate change is increasing extreme weather around the world and why it is important to take action to protect people and the environment.
Typhoon Vera(Ise Bay)

Typhoon Vera, also known as the Ise Bay Typhoon, was one of the most destructive and deadly natural disasters in Japan’s modern history. Striking on September 26, 1959, the typhoon developed in the western Pacific and rapidly intensified into a powerful storm with extremely strong winds exceeding 260 km/h. As it approached Japan, Vera moved toward the region surrounding Ise Bay, making landfall near Mie and Aichi Prefectures, where it unleashed its most catastrophic effects. The typhoon brought violent winds and torrential rain, but its most devastating impact came from the massive storm surge that overtopped and destroyed coastal sea walls. Entire towns were flooded within minutes as walls of water swept inland, trapping residents in their homes and sweeping away buildings, vehicles, and farmlands. The disaster occurred during the night, giving people little time to react, which greatly increased the human toll. Approximately 4,700 people were killed, with many more injured or reported missing, and more than 1.6 million people were left homeless after the storm ravaged coastal communities. Infrastructure suffered enormous damage: hundreds of thousands of houses were destroyed, transportation networks such as roads, railways, and ports were heavily disrupted, and industrial areas around Nagoya were flooded, severely affecting Japan’s economy. In the aftermath, the scale of the destruction revealed major weaknesses in the country’s disaster preparedness. The Japanese government responded by introducing new emergency management laws, improving meteorological forecasting, and rebuilding stronger coastal defenses and sea walls to prevent similar tragedies. The storm ultimately became a turning point that reshaped Japan’s modern disaster prevention systems. Today, Typhoon Vera is remembered not only as the country’s deadliest post-war typhoon but also as a crucial lesson in the importance of preparedness, early warning systems, and resilient infrastructure.
