Indirect Charcterization

"But a man who has been brought up under the code of a restraining civilization cannot easily nerve himself to shoot down his neighbor in cold blood and without a spoken word, except for an offense against his hearth and honor." (Pg 190, column 2)

This displays Ulrich's values and personality. Even though Georg, his mortal enemy, was standing close enough to see the whites of his eyes he did not immediately shoot him. Brought up in a town of civilization, he did not feel it was right to shoot his own neighbor.

" 'No,' said Ulrich with a laugh, the idiotic chattering laugh of a man unstrung with hideous fear. 'Who are they?' asked Georg quickly, straining his eyes to see what the other would have gladly not seen. 'Wolves'." (Pg 193 column 2)

Ulrich's sense of humor shines in this passage. Even in the face of death, Ulrich takes this serious matter lightheartedly. This shows that even grown men can act semi-childish during serious times.

A symbol that represents Ulrich is a wolf (which is ironic). Ulrich von Gradwitz represents a wolf because of his loyalty to his family. Ulrich did not believe being peaceful with his neighbors, Georg's family, wasn't right because of what his elders thought in the past. Ulrich respected his elders, and he stayed loyal by carrying on the feud like his father and grandfathers. However, Ulrich stayed loyal until the day when the tree fell on him. He was drunk and wanted to stop the fight. Sadly in the end, Ulrich and Georg were killed by a "real" loyal pack of wolves.

"For a space both men were silent, turning over in their minds the wonderful changes about that his dramatic reconciliation would bring about." (Pg 192, column 2)

The passage occurs after Georg accepts Ulrich's friend request. Both men are silent and think about what can happen in the future with the new friendship. Since the narrator is speaking from an omniscient view, we can tell that Ulrich and Georg will keep their promise. In addition, the evidence shows that Ulrich is a promising person. To sum, Ulrich will keep his promise and become friends with Georg.

" 'Neighbor,' he (Ulrich) said presently, 'Do as you please if your men come first. It was a fair compact. But as for me, I've changed my mind. If my men are the first to come, you shall be first to be helped, as though you were my guest. We have quarreled like devils all our lives over this stupid strip of forest, where the tress can't even stand upright...' " (Pg 192 column 1)

The passage explains that Ulrich wanted to stop the feud between the two families. In addition, some of Ulrich personality is shown. For example, towards the end of the passage Ulrich complains, like a child when angered, about the tree's collapse. Furthermore, Ulrich's anger is expressed in a childlike manner, but he still wants the feud to stop between the families.
