ART THERAPY FOR MENTAL ILLNESS There are many institutions that provide valuable services for mental illness. Art therapy is therapy that aims to support sufferers of mental Illness by providing ways to express oneself, particularly when words do not come easily. Art therapy can provide a diversion from challenges and a sense of achievement as artistic creations unveil, allowing an opportunity to share outwardly in a controlled manner at the artist's discretion. Art therapy can begin a journey that has been unexplored and unable to be expressed in a verbal context. The following article describes an example of how an artist found expression through art therapy to deal with an abusive childhood and post traumatic stress disorder. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-05-30/art-therapy-for-mental-illness/4724174 Examples of institutions that provide Art Therapy. Institutions providing Art Therapy to clients suffering mental illness and in need of support provide safe environments and often unaffordable materials to create works of art. These works of art become expressions of an inner need to share without confrontation.Graylands Health Campus is one such example. It aims to be a safe, supportive environment to allow expression of artistic nature by supplying a venue and art tools to enable a distraction from daily challenges. Dalwood Spilstead Services also providesTherapy Services for children and adults experiencing delays in development and in need of support. Professional and volunteers work in clinical settings as well as activity based services to provide Art Therapy along with Clinical Psychology and Occupational Therapy https://dalwoodspilstead.com/sevices Creative Expression Centre for Arts Therapy (CECAT)CECAT’s programs are aimed at promoting the mental health and recovery of young people and adults diagnosed with a mental illness through the use of arts therapy interventions and art instruction.Who is eligible?•	Clients must be aged between 16 and 65 with a primary mental health diagnosis and be motivated to engage in arts therapy for their recovery. • Referrals are necessary.
Eliza Medcraft Discipline: Modern HistoryCAP Role: Information and Presentation CoordinatorWithin my role for the Community Arts Project, I will develop a plan outlining how we will supply information to guests, as well as what certain information will be shared with the individuals partaking in the weekend of the Don’t Mind Me event, during the 7th and 8th of October 2017. Different presentations, guest speakers and short films will be shown throughout the two days to raise awareness and inform people about the topic of mental illness. I believe that my discipline in Modern History will assist me with research and gaining an understanding of the past of mental illness, and how this has led us to where we are now. I will be able to provide important information about the changing face of mental illness and key statistics that are relevant. Presentations, performances and Information:I aim to provide an informative and valuable range of presentations that bring people in, inform and open up conversations about mental illness. To do this, I wanted to include a variety of different mediums to educate guests without lecturing everyone in a boring way. To do this, we would showcase well-known media personalities, academic speakers and individuals with past or current mental illnesses themselves. Also, student short films and music performances from local bands would be another way to attract people and relate in a cultural or personal way. To offer more physical, ‘take home’ information, a variety of pamphlets and brochures will be provided that explain the statistics of mental illness, signs and symptoms, as well as prevention and the current services available. As print media can sometimes be less popular, there will be an App available to download that has all the same information as the pamphlets and brochures available during the event.

Would you know if a friend was inflicted with a mental health disorder? And who would you talk to if you or a friend was suffering from a mental health condition? My two adolescent aged nephews possessed little knowledge and factual information in this regard.

Considering the frequency that teenagers are diagnosed with a mental health disorder it is a pleasure for Don’t Mind Me - Mental Illness No Drama to hold creative workshops and role play sessions specifically for adolescents run by adolescents at 1 pm on both Saturday the 7th October and Sunday the 8th October.

Children tend to talk to their friends more than they do adults. These workshops and role play sessions will allow adolescents the opportunity to exchange ideas and gain knowledge and (fingers crossed) make new friendships.

After discussing mental illness with my two adolescent aged nephews and asking them questions such as, what is a mental disorder? Would they know what to do if they felt they may have, or a friend may be inflicted with a mental health condition? I realised children, even though commonly affected with mental illness don't really know what one is, a part from what they have seen or heard via films. Therefore Don't Mind Me - Mental Illness No Drama will be holding two workshops on both Saturday the 7th of October and Sunday 8th of October at 11am for adolescents which will be operated by adolescents. Again after chatting with my nephews, that age bracket appear to more receptive to information recived from their peers rather than adult professionals.
