At this stage a child's caregiver is the most important person. If a child can trust their caregiver, they begin to feel safe. This is done by the caregiver feeding baby at proper times. Soothing baby when they're uncomfortable just to give some examples. Mistrust then of course develops from baby not being fed properly. Baby crying and caregiver not trying to comfort them. In text we learn, "baby develops sense of whether the world is a good and safe place".

At this stage my life event had not occurred and so trust was my resolution. Up to this stage I had no reason not to trust my parents.

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

At this stage, with proper support a child gains more control and seek independence. Allowing your child to pick their clothes for the day regardless of what that looks like, perhaps even picking what veggies they like at the grocery store. These are some ways parents can encourage autonomy. In text we learn "Child develops a balance of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt". Allowing your child as a parent to "control" simple aspects of their life benefits them and leads them towards autonomy rather than self doubt and shame. At this stage even though my life event had not happen my resolution was autonomy. When my life event did happen I had the courage and ability to independently learn this new skill. This exemplified my development of autonomy in this stage.

At this stage, children develop initiative by trying new activities and eagerly facing challenges without fear or guilt. In text we learn "Children develop initiative when trying new activities and is not overwhelmed with guilt". So even when a child attempts a new activity and fails, a parent should remain encouraging. Being dismissive and discouraging in contrast develops feelings or guilt. Usually children then feel ashamed and seek help versus attempting the challenge again independently. At this stage, my life event hadn't occurred but my resolution was initiative. Again, because when the life event did occur I had the initiative to learn how to swim on my own. I took this challenge head on with no fear.

At this stage, in text we learn " Child must learn skills of the culture or face feelings of incompetence". It is crucial at this stage parents are encouraging and providing the necessary support a child needs. A child must feel capable and competent to master various social and emotional skills. Without these needs being met a child falls into feelings of inferiority. Feeling not good enough, less than and doubting themselves.

At this stage, my life event occurred, and my resolution was inferiority. With the lack of encouragement to continue to swim and gain the tools needed to head towards my ultimate goal I was lost, felt neglected and less than.

At this stage Identity relates to your experiences, relationships, values and beliefs. It is all of what makes you, you. People who develop identity have more self-confidence, more independent and naturally better relationships. Identity confusion is questioning who you are and what makes you, you. In text we learn "Adolescent must determine sense of self- or experience confusion about roles". Without these developing skills towards your identity you become confuse with your sense of self, lack of confidence and mental health can have difficulties as well. At this stage my resolution was Identity confusion. Since I was unable to interact, experience new things or develop a new sense of identity through social activities. I didn't know who I was, what made me happy. I was lost with no direction in sight.

At this stage, people who are more successful developing intimacy are able to have fulfilling relationships with other people. This means having a circle of friends, perhaps a romantic relationship, even healthy coworker relationships. In text we learn "Person seeks to make commitment to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption". With out developing intimacy your life can turn to be very lonely, fear of commitment and unhealthy social circles. At this stage my resolution was a mix of isolation at first transitioning to intimacy. With no support nor motivation from my parents in past stages I had isolated myself. When meeting my husband, having his support and guidance I was able to transition into developing intimacy.

Generativity vs. Stagnation

At this stage, your life's work really comes into perspective. In text we learn "Mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the next generation or else feels personal Impoverishment". This means you reflect on your work, and seek to mentor the next generation to have a sense of fulfillment. You have made commitment to relationships, family and are motivated to mentor/guide the next generation as your tribute to society. Without finding a way to contribute you develop stagnation. This may cause feelings of disconnect, having no interest and being self-center. At this stage my resolution was generatively. Reflecting again on past stages and adding to that contribution, with proper support and skills developed my life event would have enter under generativity. It would have been my mark on my legacy and also contribution towards society.

At this stage we learn in text " elderly person achieves acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death, or else despairs over inability to relieve life". This means at this stage you do a lot of reflecting. Looking back onto your life, you develop integrity by feeling no regrets, wholesome, at peace and most importantly accomplished. Feelings of despair might develop in this stage if you feel regrets, time wasted or perhaps unproductive. At this stage my resolution was despair. With characteristics following more so despair, my life event would have fallen under despair. Much time was wasted feeling not enough, not supported and incomplete.
