Practices and Habits

This category was one of the main ones I wanted to focus one. Previously I said my practice had turned into a habit which was about showing gratitude to the people that inspire me, and I feel like I achieved this throughout the course. I personally have never been much of an actor or theater person, and most of the sections we have taken were focused on that skill. But I had to keep an open mind, and try to get through each class as best as I could. This being said, I felt very thankful for all the teachers that pushed me, and encouraged me to try my hardest knowing I was not a theater major, as well as my classmates who encouraged me during stressful moments. I also previously talked about having respect, and how I think it is a habit everyone should have on artists' work. This was felt greatly throughout the semester, especially in playwriting where we got to see everyone's individual work. I truly felt respected by my peers, as well as I respected everyone's work since I knew the struggle behind creating them. With respect being in the picture, everyone felt more comfortable to share their pieces, and as a non theater major, I felt more respect coming from everyone around me.

Collaboration

Collaboration is one of the most important aspects of this class, and is something that everyone needs to do in their life whether it is within the arts or in their every day lives. This being said the main way we have collaborated in this class that has stuck with my is in the dance portion. The main reason it stuck with me was because I am a trained dancer, I have danced my entire life, and it is my major, but I was paired with someone who has never truly danced the same way I have ever. Considering this, the collaboration was quite interesting, and I was nervous going into it. I was nervous because I had only ever collaborated with other dance majors, and did not know how to collaborate with a non major. Looking back on it now, this is what collaborating is about. In life you will not necessarily be paired with someone who is trained, or is exactly similar to you, so you have to work it out where both of you will succeed. This is why I have always said it is important to be able to collaborate with others. I learned so much and did movement I would have never done with my partner, and it was truly exciting to see what we came up with together.

As I talked about in part one of our personal statements, my main value is honesty whether it is within your piece of work, or within yourself. I believe when someone is extremely honest within their work it can show vulnerability which is hard for people to showcase most of the time. The main time I considered this value was during playwriting when my partner and I had to write our own monologues about our hometown. It made me think about how I should truly showcase the town I grew up in, and mine and my partners really felt honest after reading them together. In this section we had to combine both monologues and create a monologue scene together. This was probably the most vulnerable we both could be considering both of our scripts were sentimental of our home and experiences. Since we were not afraid to be honest and truly perform, it ended up coming across very clearly to everyone that witnessed it. The only way for this to have happened was because we were truly honest in our work, and everyone understood that.
