Jane Eyre is a story that illustrates exactly how some of our worst problems in life can make us into better people and we can benefit from what we learn along the way. If someone is looking to read a story with a strong protagonist whose will to keep going is inspiring, then I definitely recommend the book Jane Eyre.

A Quote important to the theme of Jane Eyre

"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will" (292). This quote is a very popular quote from the book, but that is because it shows Jane's true character. Jane is a strong person and this quote shows that no matter who you are you can accomplish anything. Jane came from being a lonely little girl, to becoming a teacher and a strong woman making a life for herself and navigating her way through any problem that she faced. She overcame adversity and that made her the person she ends up becoming.

6. Who is the main character in your book? What is this character like? Tell the character’s name, age, appearance, friends, personality, and problems…
Start out: The main character of my book is…

The main character of my book is Jane Eyre. Jane starts out as a young, quiet, orphaned girl that just wants to feel like she is a part of a family. “I was quiet; I believed I was content; to the eyes of others, usually even to my own, I appeared a discipline and subdued character” (92). She is clever and intelligent, but does have a temper when her cousin John bullies her. She is also a very kind person that can be hurt easily. When her Aunt told Mr. Brocklehurst that Jane can be a liar she was hurt, but stood up for herself; this is like a foreshadow of how strong of a person Jane will grow to be. “Well might I dread, well might I dislike Mrs. Reed; for it was her nature to wound me cruelly: never was I happy in her presence” (32). Throughout Jane’s life she has few really good friends. At Gateshead she is friends with Bessie, one of the house keepers. Bessie is the only light in Jane’s dark world living with her Aunt and cousins. Once Jane arrives at Lowood, she makes friends with Helen Burns; a girl that Jane becomes close with and that always makes Jane feel good even when Mr. Brocklehurst embarraces her infront of the whole school. She also likes her teacher Miss Temple. As Jane goes through life she still faces hardships and sadness, but meets more and more people that treat her much better than her Aunt and cousins did. When she becomes further and further removed by the years from her life at Gateshead, she gains confidence and sets up a path for her life that makes her happy. She finds love with Rochester but is also heart broken by him. These problems she has and the way she overcomes them shows her strength as a strong female character.
