The ALPS is a chemical system which will remove
radionuclides to below legal limits for release. However, because tritium is
contained in water molecules, ALPS cannot remove it, which gives rise to
questions about the discharge of treated water to the sea.

In 2014 a new Kurion strontium removal system was
commissioned. This is mobile and can be moved around the tank groups to further
clean up water which has been treated by ALPS.

The clean tritiated water was the focus of attention in
2014. A September 2013 report from the Atomic Energy Society of Japan
recommends diluting the ALPS-treated water with seawater and releasing it to
the sea at the legal discharge concentration, with monitoring to ensure that
normal background tritium levels are not exceeded

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster of 2011
is believed to have leaked significant amounts of radiation that may have
affected animals and plants in the region

A recent study suggests that the radioactive material

released in the air by the Fukushima nuclear disaster has led to widespread
negative effects such as population decline and genetic damage in the animals,
insects and wildlife of the region.

There was a study on the pale grass blue butterfly which is the most common butterfly in Japan. They discovered that this species suffered a reduction size, reduction in growth, and high mortality and abnormality rates. However, their results also hinted thatthe Fukushima butterflies were evolving radiation resistance
