Ex: 'I would feel sorry for this person, if I knew them.' 

The key is 'if I knew them' because it describes that WOULD have happened.

It can get confusing sometimes but you just need your past, present and your general subject.

Ex:'A car might crash into his house if he were to build it on Interstate-40.'

He is the subject.

Were is the past subject.
