Nearly 2 million Children under 15 were at work in 1900 census.
These children had very little time for schooling.
Most of these children had low paying jobs in hazardous textile mills.
Lack of education led to worse adulthoods.

Lewis Hine-famous photographer who exposed hazardous child labor.
NCLC-Dedicated to exposing working conditions of the children and end all child labor.

Settlement houses helped provide houses for children and families.
Reduced max workings hours from 56-54 in textile mills.
Strikes helped to make changes for what they wanted.
Compulsory laws- required kids to get an education, and prevented some from having to work at dangerous jobs.

They were both terrible for the children's health and put a lot of physical and mental pressure on these children. There were a lot more children in labor then there should’ve been in both time periods.

“The number of minors illegally employed in cases pursued by the U.S. The Department of Labor has soared 69 percent since 2018”.
There are now more children without parents in the US which forces them into dangerous jobs because they need money to live.
Some of the companies offer low wages so adults can’t live off them but children would take these jobs just because they need money and low quality jobs.
The pandemic drove more than 3 million adults into early retirement.

Much more reformers in the Progressive era because it was much a bigger problem and the child labor was worse. But in the Progressive era they were more focused on exposing the quality of child labor than just fixing it.

Child Labor Coalition- Is trying to prevent most child labor in the US.
Department of Labor- helped to prevent when Mcdonald’s was using 10 year old workers as low-pay laborers.
Bob Casey- was a senator who helped prevent hazards in child labor from the US.

They are both attempting to lessen the dangers of child labor and weaken the force and pressure put onto children in jobs. During the Progressive Era the solutions were much more immediate and they were more deeper problems in Child labor.

Higher wages so that more adults would choose to work in the hard labor jobs that are dangerous.
Law made so it prevents jobs considered dangerous to use children as laborers.
14 and 15 year old teens are not allowed to work later than 7pm on weekdays and 9 pm on weekends.
