The reason why the drought proves my claim is because the average rainfall between the two years was only 230 mm of rain. The amount of rain was not enough to keep the Portulaca seed around, so it died. The drought started the natural section (the ability to survive and reproduce) in the Finch population because the food source available needs a different sets of traits, the long and thicker beak, which some did not have at the time. Natural selection weeded out or killed off the Finches with short and thin beaks because they could not survive, and only the Finches with thick and long beaks, the trait needed for survive and eat the available food, were left. Those Finches then began to reproduce and pass the traits needed to survive to their offspring. So, natural selection is the microevolution that occured.

The reason why the evidence 2 proves my claim is because the seeds were the food source of the Ground Finches. The Portulaca seeds were soft and easy to get, so the Finches had no need to eat the tribulus seed which were large and hard seed. But, when the drought began the population of Portulaca seeds dropped to 0 and the small and thin beaked Finches no longer had any food source because they couldn't eat the Tribulus seeds, this is when the natural section began to start. Natural selection occurs when there is a variation in a trait among the individual in a population. The trait affects the survival and/or ability to reproduce. Since the small and thin beak Finches had no food they did not survive and where not selected, but the ones with larger and thicker beaks could survive and eat the harder seeds. This is why it proves my claim.

The reason why evidence 3 proves my claim is because natural selection chose the Finches only with thicker and longer becks. They survived because to eat the only plant that survived, tribulus, a harder seed to eat, you needed thick and long beaks to eat this seed. The population did drop because the one with without long and thick beaks died since there was no foods source, but the ones that are left now can reproduce offspring with beaks that will help the survive in their environment. The gene passed on will carry the thick and large beak trait. This is why it is natural selection because it wasn't a random trait, mutation, luck, genetic drift, or migration because they didn't move.
