He grew up with a family of 9 siblings and his parents. A poor life with his parents as tenant farmers, leaving them to eat barely anything. Due to the penal laws that were around while Edmund was alive he had to get his education from illegal schools of travelling teachers. This school was known as Hedge School Masters, this education his family got for free. His religious education he received from his parents. From this education Edmund was taught business and lived a life with his wife Mary Elliot. Eventually Mary died due to giving birth to their first child so Edmund went into a time of great mourning. It was from this mourning that Edmund began to believe in God. From his brokenness he began to devote compassion to worrying about others. This sparked his journey to following God. He then went on to become an educationalist for the poor. This was most likely triggered by his poor childhood and from his compassion did not wish that struggle upon another soul. The Parable of the Friends at Midnight tells a story of one friend that goes to another to ask for three loaves of bread as a traveler has come and he has no food to offer him. The other friend at first says know because of his shameless audacity, his children were asleep and the door was locked. But in the end he got up and gave him what he came for. This parable sends a message about always helping someone at anytime. If you were to go into the story further you could assume the friend asking for bread was of lower ranking of the other and through this parable it says to be kind to those even below you. The parable also says that the friend asked with shameless audacity which is asking without feeling humiliated over asking something in a disrespectful manner. This then leads to the desire of always being kind to everyone as even though this one man was very demanding and rude his friend still got up and helped him. This would've linked to how Jesus coped with all the people in Jerusalem who didn't want him around, even though they were cruel to him he showed them kindness. Which leads onto why this parable might've inspired Edmund Rice. Since the parable is all about helping others no matter the time of day or where you rank in society Edmund would have definitely been inspired. This is because in his life-time as a reformer he helped to educate the poor, who were of low standard to him. He taught them all his life and set up organisations to keep spreading that compassion.  The miracle story that would've inspired Edmund Rice would be the feeding of the five thousand. This story is about how Jesus manages to feed five thousand people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. He manages this because he has faith in God that he will provide for them. This story would inspire Edmund Rice because helping the poor (all the people) is what he strives to do. He would give up clothes, items and food for them and even taught them. Prayer for the Poor and Needy-
Lord God, 
You came to give honour to the least, those forgotten, overlooked and misjudged.
You came to give first place to the last, those left behind, misunderstood and undervalued.
You came to give a warm welcome to the lost, those who are orphaned, abandoned and destitute. 

Help us to be your ears to listen to their cries.
Help us to be your voice speaking out love and acceptance.
Help us to be your feet walking beside those in need.
Help us to be your hands to clothe, feed and shelter them. 

You came for the least, the lost and last of this world. 
Lord, hear our prayer.

Amen.

This prayer would nourish Edmund Rice because it's all about helping the poor. It says thanks to the lord for coming and having mercy on the 'least' of the world. Edmund Rice would say this as he too wants to give to the 'least' of the world. He wants to feed them, walk with them, be next to them and shelter them.

  The first quote ( "Have courage; the good seed will grow up in the children's hearts later on") talks about to always believe that there is good in every child. Edmund Rice educated children and in the early parts before he had other educators helping him he found working with the children hard. This quote would've been something to remind him that no matter how they act you must never get angry or loose your temper as there is good in all of their hearts, it's just still growing like they are. The second quote ("Give to the poor in handfuls") talks about how he helped the poor. Edmund Rice always gave food, clothing and other items to the poor. This quote goes on to say that giving to the poor shouldn't be a one time thing where you only give them so much. It should be a continuous thing where you always give as much as you can. Then the third quote ("Each Brother is an open letter from Christ-- a message written not with ink but in the Spirit of the living God, with a faithful human heart to carry it.") talks about how Edmund Rice recognised all of his 'brothers' as a message of God. By message he means that they all in some way, shape or form will spread good to the world as they follow and are from God and continue his mission. By recognising all his 'brothers' as these letters he says that they all have the great potential to do the world good as they follow Jesus' teachings and will show compassion to all.

You are also to not overtax them beyond their capacity as they can not afford it and their efforts are needed in the work place to continue wealth among the rich and society to stay on two feet. This is relevant to Edmund Rice as he educated the poor in religion and everything they needed to know in life. So, for the Condition of Labor to be put into action Edmund Rice’s life commitment was acknowledged to be the right thing to the public. He was priestly because he was a daily mass-goer. He would attend mass at the church in his home town Waterford. He showed prophetic through his work. He taught the poor Jesus' teachings therefore, teaching them was an act against injustice for the poor. It wasn't so much verbal to the public but through his actions he got his words across. One could say though that it was verbal to the people who were being damaged, the poor. He gave them an opportunity to learn and be treated as equal. He also asked for help from his friends and other people in the city. These people were enlightened by the truth behind the inequality in their home. Edmund Rice showed kingly very often. He built schools for the poor to put his 'prophetic' into action. These schools were built for the soul purpose of teaching the poor. He began teaching them even though he still didn't have other teachers to help him. Eventually two educators came and helped teach the poor children. He would also give clothes and food to the poor so that they could live and have a better and easier life. Some time after this he also founded the Congregation of the Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers who helped spread compassion to the poor all over the world. They are a worldwide religious community within the Catholic Church, that was also founded by Edmund Rice. They continued Edmund Rice's work of spreading compassion to the poor and educating the poor in all subjects and the word of the Lord. They preach the Gospels to all ministries including the poor showing priestly. As a Catholic Church community they would also have a lot to do with speaking in Church. Going around the world teaching the poor they send their message against injustice through the children and when they travel showing prophetic. Kingly is shown through their action of travelling and educating the children who are less fortunate than others. They send the message to the public that we should all be treated as equals.
