The shops there were tin shops where you could work as a Tin Smith, Shoe repair/making shops, and paper cutting shops. These jobs were mostly for the men. Women worked in Auschwitz as well. Laundry shops and munition factories were the places that women were placed. It had a significantly higher population than Auschwitz I. The majority of people lived here. There were about 800 per building. The buildings in reality were housing for horses and were only made for 50 of them. Living there was uncomfortable, but it is not like they stayed there long. The people that were sent to Birkenau were sent to their death place. Auschwitz II Birkenau is where children, elderly, gays, and useless people were sent to await their death. Most had to start by lying. They lied about their childhood so that they could obtain a job and not be sent to the other camp. Once they got a job, staying alive themselves was a hard thing to do. They were malnourished and mistreated. Many people had to switch jobs and learn how to do new tasks to do so. They would keep their already stale food and hide it for another day. If you were lucky you made connections and traded goods with other people. In few cases supervisors would treat their workers with a scrap of food. Surviving in Auschwitz II is hard to depict because few survived.The people that lived there were destined for death, few survived. The ones that survived were the ones that found jobs or found a way around death. One of the three most terrifying aspects I chose was that from the beginning families were separated. Auschwitz was far worse than this but the reason I chose it was because family was all these people had. To me family is important which allowed me to understand that after the classification and new laws and the struggle to make ends meet, family was all the Jews had left besides their faith. They were separated and didn't know anything about each other after it, they were left wondering if their families were suffering or dead. Another terrifying aspect was that the people were severely malnourished. They were barely fed and when they were it was plain bland scraps of food that were often stale or rotten. The Jews barely hung on and you could tell by how they appeared, gaunt. My third most terrifying aspect of Auschwitz is that massive graves were made for the people that were in the gas chambers. The people were burned and prisoners were forced to use the fat from the burning to burn more bodies more efficiently. A few people would survive the chambers, and even when they did they were pushed into the graves and buried alive with the everyone else.
