Jungle

The description of the jungle having "flocks of parakeets, macaws, and loros that chattered and squeaked in the fringe of the forest," shows the remote feeling the town had. You can imagine Ernesto's point of view when he looks up at the trees and sees the birds flying overhead because of the vivid imagery. The old men also described the forest by saying "the forest doesn't belong to anyone and it belongs to everyone," because the forest is filled with life and although it is useful to them, it can also be dangerous and uncontrollable.

The description that the road's "dirt surface had been packed hard by hundreds of years of traffic," shows the friendly atmosphere and history the town had. You can imagine watching all the people walking through town and gathering in the roads from Ernesto's point of view and how he must have met new people all the time. Because the jalcocotecanos preferred to gather in the roads instead of the plaza, the roads became an important aspect of their society and traditions.

Arroyo

The description that the arroyo "could rage dangerously in the summer freshets," but that "most of the year, it brought driftwood downstream and delivered it to the jalcocotecanos who chopped it into kindling," shows the relationship they had with the arroyo. You can see from Ernesto's point of view how the river could be both dangerous and important to their way of life at the same time, because it was something the jalcocotecanos enjoyed but also had to be cautious with.
